Principles of Instruction: Rosenshire, B: 2012

  • This seminal article presents 10 research-based principles of instruction, along with suggestions for classroom practice. The principles come from research in: cognitive science, on master teachers, and on cognitive supports. The fact that the three sources suggest common principles provides further validity for the strength of the claims. This article was helpful in shaping the principles embedded within the Mulgrave Learning and Teaching guide which is the primary tool used for teachers as part of their annual growth process.

What Makes Great Research: Coe, R: 2014

  • This report reviews over 200 pieces of research to identify the elements of teaching with the strongest evidence of improving attainment. It identifies and explains six key factors that contribute to great teaching. This article was also helpful in shaping the principles embedded within the Mulgrave Learning and Teaching guide.

Visible Learning- 250+ Influences on Student Achievement: 2018

  • Professor John Hattie produced a synthesis and analysis of educational research which was used to produce “effect-sizes” for their influence on student learning. This ground-breaking work has been both championed and criticized but, nonetheless, offers interesting insight into the impact of various educational initiatives. This work has been a useful reference point for strategic discussions on the direction of learning at Mulgrave.

What works Clearinghouse

  • The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviews the existing research on different programs, products, practices, and policies in education. This is a useful resource for comparing various educational programmes and interventions.

Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) Teaching and Learning Toolkit

  • This is a UK-based resource which was funded by the Department for Education. It presents a summarized overview of evidence from thousands of international educational research studies. The resource provides a robust yet accessible overview of key factors which influence student achievement and includes an overview of the underlying costs and impact of a number of initiatives. This has been a helpful resource to confirm and challenge our thinking about strategic and existing educational initiatives
