Student Advisory Sub-Councils
The Student Council includes representation from the various Sub-Councils, as well as students who are selected through an application process. Our Sub-Councils are:
Global Nomads
The Global Nomads leadership team gives students opportunities to connect and engage with local community partners to generate learning, connections and impact around big global citizenship issues, grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and core themes of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice and sustainability. As an extension of Upper School GEx (Global Citizenship Experiential Education), the Global Nomads leadership teams work with core partners including Backpack Buddies, Kidsafe, Project Backpack, Employ to Empower, Mission Possible, The Pacific Immigrant Resources Society, West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation, A Better Life Foundation and more, depending on team interests and partner needs. The leadership initiatives are “project-based” driven by student teams in collaboration with our partners; they may also explore projects with other schools and education groups if possible. Their work is an extension of our commitment to building authentic, impactful, reciprocal and sustainable community partnerships beyond Mulgrave.
Athletics Council
Creative Arts Council
Performing Arts Council
The Performing Arts Council is an exciting opportunity for leadership in the areas of music, drama, dance, and tech. The PA Council takes the lead in developing performance and mentorship opportunities for students and builds connections with community performing arts events and artists. They also provide support for events at school by ushering and working backstage.
GSA: Gender Sexuality Alliance
The Mulgrave GSA provides a place for Upper School students to examine LGBTQ+ rights and issues while giving an opportunity for action and a voice for LGBTQ+ students and their allies within our community.
Co-Curricular Council
The Co-Curricular Council aims to streamline, innovate, and advance our co-curricular programming for Grades 7 through 12. The group tracks the engagement of students in our co-curricular activities, communicates with teachers regularly to ensure they are fulfilling their commitments, and updates the school community on the goals that each club achieves throughout the year. The Council also guides students or teachers who wish to start up a new co-curricular club in pitch meetings to ensure they fit into Mulgrave’s strategic vision.
Environmental Sustainability Council
The Environmental Sustainability Council works to inspire hope and action to protect the environment and decrease our collective environmental footprint. Recent initiatives include the addition of a greenhouse to the rooftop garden, waste education and bin signage, monthly education through our community newsletter, water bottle cleaning, greening of school events, Earth Week events, and student run workshops and presentations led for the other schools/broader community. The group also contributes to the annual EcoSchools certification submission.
Adventure Council
The Adventure Council gives students the opportunity to help shape Outdoor Education events by organising adventures and recruiting students to participate.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Council
The DEIJ Council is responsible for representing the student voice and communicating issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is rooted in the intention of fostering a climate of empathy and belonging while allowing students to make their voices heard when discussing the matters of marginalised groups in our society. The Council creates engaging and relevant programming to educate the community on issues faced in our school, hosts and introduces guest speakers, attends DEI-related student conferences, plans and attends Mulgrave’s Good Trouble Conference, and facilitates student affinity groups.
Peer Counselling Council
The Peer Counselling subcouncil is responsible for representing the student voice and communicating issues and events around mental health and wellbeing. It is rooted in the intention of providing additional student support to complement the Personal Counselling Program where students can access support from a peer for lower level issues. Peer Counsellors play an active role in creating and implementing mental health prevention programs at Mulgrave School. Peer Counsellors also take on leadership roles in promoting mental health awareness days such as Bell Let's Talk and Mental Health Awareness Week throughout the year.
