Crunching the Numbers - Mulgrave’s Financials

As we launch our annual Momentum fundraising campaign this week, questions are likely to arise about Mulgrave’s finances and independent school norms. Around the world, there are various structures for international schools; however, the most significant point in our context is that Mulgrave is a registered charity. This means that every dollar of tuition funnels back into the school for student benefit - there is no one making a profit, there are no shareholders, and all of our Board members are unpaid volunteers. The next important point is that 88% of our annual revenue from tuition and fees – so about $28.4 million of $32 million – is dedicated to faculty and staff compensation. Our teachers and staff are critically important, so it is natural that this is the case. However, the budget leaves us with about 12% to cover essential operational expenses such as utilities, maintenance, classroom supplies and teaching materials, and technology critical to our core programming (academic, arts, athletics, outdoor education, service/leadership).

And this is what leads us to the importance of fundraising. Our school has been built on the generosity of families who have been a part of our community over the last 30 plus years. Incredibly, our campus and so many of the resources that our students enjoy today are the result of almost $60 million in donations. Additionally, we reach out to our school community annually to support Momentum, which funds the priorities that are born from innovation, evolving student needs, and our strategy. Families’ participation, at a level that is meaningful to them, is our most important measure; it is a nod of approval for our direction and ethos.

There are some very exciting projects included in Momentum this year - a revitalisation of The Hill and new playground, an eBus, and a recording studio - as well as the all-important Teacher Development Fund, Financial Assistance Fund, and Head’s Priority Fund. I encourage you to learn more through the emails and Connexions articles to come. In the meantime, please review the Q&A below to dig further into our financial facts, and take a look at this presentation, which highlights key points.
