International Baccalaureate
We believe that the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes deliver the best academic experience in the world.
They are broad, internationally focussed, rigorous, and forward-looking. The curricula are based on the development of critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving approaches and not only lay the foundation for solid basic skills and knowledge, but also ensure students can acquire conceptual understanding and high-level analytical skills. The IB:
- centres on learners – the IB’s student-centred programmes promote healthy relationships, ethical responsibility and personal challenge
- develops effective approaches to teaching and learning – IB programmes help students to develop the attitudes and skills they need for both academic and personal success
- works within global contexts – IB programmes increase understanding of languages and cultures, and explore globally significant ideas and issues
- explores significant content – IB programmes offer a curriculum that is broad and balanced, conceptual and connected
- that goes beyond intellectual development and academic success.
Mulgrave is a Continuum IB World School, meaning that we offer three progressive, high-quality programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) from preschool to Grade 5, Middle Years Programme (MYP) from Grade 6-10, and Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11 and 12.
The IB Primary Years Programme is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3-12 years. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance. These are explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.
The IB Middle Years Programme is a conceptual curriculum framework for students between the ages of 11-16 years. The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally-minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
The IB Diploma Programme is a curriculum framework for students between the ages of 16-19 years. The IBDP aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge - students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. The DP was established to provide students with a balanced education, to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding.
The IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning Skills
In an increasingly challenging and changing world, solid values and thoughtful skill development are crucial to enable our students to be successful, fulfilled, and happy in work and life.
The IB Learner Profile is a set of attributes that guide and inspire our students to be engaged and active participants in their learning and their communities.
Mulgrave's Approaches to Learning (AtL) skills are tied to the Learner Profile and embedded in our IB programmes at all levels, giving students key tools within the context of their classroom activities and project work. We believe so wholeheartedly in the power of AtL skills throughout education and beyond, that students' first report card of year focusses only on these skills. Our data shows us that typically, academic success follows.
