Past Announcements
The University and Careers Counselling Department (UCCD) would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for everyone’s continued support, and to extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Grade 12 students for reaching the Winter Break milestone of completing their university applications!
We have met with our Senior School students, looking at their plans for the future. It has been very productive, in particular with our Grade 12s, as they begin to secure spots around the world for programmes, and we look forward to sharing more good news with you soon!
Upon our return from Winter Break, our focus will be on deepening our working relationships with both students and families in Grade 10 and 11 as we move further along the road to post-secondary plans and course selection meetings for Grade 10s. Until then, we encourage all students to take a well-deserved break from a busy school semester.
Please note that we will be on vacation from December 23, 2022 to January 14, 2023 (Mulgrave is closed from December 23, 2023 to January 8, 2024), and will return to school on Monday, January 15 when Mulgrave reopens. We will have limited access to email and no voicemail during this period.
Class of 2024, should you have university-related emergencies (these do not include not adhering to deadlines or maximum number of applications), please email Dr. Tabet to state your concern, and you will be directed accordingly. Otherwise, we will respond to emails and voicemail messages upon our return.
In past years in our holiday message, we have shared with you some of our favourite holiday films, music, personal traditions and local activities to celebrate the season. This year, we thought each of us would share our recommendations of things you can do over the Winter Break (that’s not necessarily about celebrations, but connected to seeking joy and wonder).
Mr. Brooks: For those interested in combining a Christmas classic with live music, I recommend checking out the VSO’s production of “Elf in Concert”. Having attended other VSO movie nights in the past, I can confidently say that they never disappoint. Elf also has some Vancouver connections, with the majority of the North Pole scenes being shot in the Pacific Coliseum at the PNE.
Mr. Matheson: Continuing the theme of live musical performance, I recommend the award-winning Chor Leoni choir’s winter seasonal concert. You can look forward to new and familiar carols offering a mindful and reflective evening away from the hustle and bustle.
Ms. Tang: Since this Winter Break is also about relaxation and rejuvenation, I encourage you to take some time and enjoy the outdoors (wherever you may be). For those who are staying local, go on a hike up to Rice Lake, stroll through Van Dusen Gardens, or head up to Capilano Suspension Bridge for Canyon Lights (which are on until January 21).
Ms Verdone: For fellow music and film lovers, I heartily recommend the recent biopic on Leonard Bernstein, Maestro, which boasts an all-star cast and two legendary producers, Spielberg and Scorsese, collaborating on this complex, stark, creative and poignant film.
However you choose to spend your break, we send you warm wishes from all of us on the University and Careers Counselling Team.
Kelvin Brooks, Paul Matheson, Joyce Tang, Leah Verdone

The UCCD will be out-of-office from Monday, November 6 to Monday, November 13 for Mulgrave's November Reading Break and observance and school closure of Rembrance Day. We will be returning to school on Tuesday, November 14. During this period, we will have limited access to email or voicemail. If your email is an emergency, please contact the Senior School Office, explain your situation, and you will be directed accordingly. Otherwise, we will respond to all communications upon our return.

Welcome back to our students! We can’t wait to connect with students and families during upcoming coffee mornings as well as through cohort and individual student meetings. Additionally, we welcome families to join us online during our monthly office hour (translation in Mandarin will be offered in the second half of the hour with the generous support from our respected colleague, Jia Shu Li) and to request individual meetings as needed.
We hope that you feel energized by summer vacation and the excitement of being back at school! All students are warmly invited to connect with their University Counsellor for a meeting this fall. We appreciate your understanding that senior students will take priority at the beginning of the year as they work toward university applications, and we look forward to meeting with all Senior School students throughout the fall.
It is at long last that we are excited to introduce our newest member of the University and Careers Counselling team, Kelvin Brooks (detailed biography). He joins us after having been on with university admissions and recruitment from 2016-2021 (working with Carleton Univeristy and SFU). We are grateful to have him complete our team to support your journey of self-discovery, learning and pursuit of your dreams. May this year be a memorable one for you all!

Mulgrave School offers the PSAT assessment optionally to Grade 10 students who are intending to apply to the United States. Therefore, if you are not planning to do so, then we advise you not to write the PSAT.
What is the PSAT?
The PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT, which is a standardised test offered by the CollegeBoard - the organisation that delivers the SAT. The PSAT consists of four separate sections covering reading, writing, and mathematics. The assessment takes three hours to complete and is offered in October.
Who should write the PSAT?
There are two types of students who can choose write the PSAT:
- Students interested in post-secondary / university studies in the United States including those looking at NCAA athletic recruitment.
- Students who hold citizenship in the United States (further details below).
Note: Because the PSAT is a preliminary SAT, the assessment can give an indication of performance on the SAT. American citizens who choose to write the PSAT in Grade 10 can use it as a practice to write again in Grade 11 as those who score well in the PSAT/NMSQT may have the opportunity to participate in the National Merit Scholarship competition organised by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Please be aware that no other country requires the SAT/ACT, and many American institutions have created test-optional policies due to COVID-19 that extend to your graduating class, but not all. Refer to Fairtest.org for the complete list and discuss your decision and related questions with your University Counsellor.
Is there a cost to writing the PSAT?
Yes. It will cost $25 for each student to write. Those who register will be billed for the cost of the test via School Cash Online, and payment must be received by Friday, September 29, 2023.
When is the PSAT?
The PSAT will be offered to Grade 10 students wishing to take it on Friday, October 20, 2023. Please note that this is a Professional Development Day, and Mulgrave school bus service will not be available.
How do I register for the PSAT?
If you would like to take the PSAT, please sign up using this Google Form. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Due to a technical difficulty, we've extended the deadline to Friday, September 8 at 3pm Pacific Time.
If you have any questions, please contact the University & Careers Counselling Department.

In the past few months, we have had a chance to check-in with our Grade 11 students to discuss how the year has been going thus far, and what are the "Plans for the Future". We will continue to do this upon our return from Winter Break. In the Spring, we will focus our work specifically on university choices and applications. Grade 11 students, if you haven't checked-in with your counsellor recently, please schedule an appointment in January to check-in.
January 22

To our Grade 11 students and families -- as we continue to move forward with the university planning process, here are some questions for you to consider when it comes to "Best Fit".
- Do I want to attend a large or small university (campus size, student population)?
- Do I want to be in a large/small town? Urban or suburban?
- Do I want large class sizes or small class sizes?
- Are specific facilities important to me? If so, which ones?
- Are there programmes/courses offered that are related to my field of interest?
- Do I want to be close to home? Close to family? Or far, far away?
- Is climate/geography a factor for me? If so, what is it?
- Do I want to continue to pursue athletics in university? Do they have the team that I want to be a part of?
- How am I funding my post-secondary education? Will I need scholarships?
- Do I want a co-op, overseas, international exchange programme?
- How important are reputational surveys and rankings to me?
February 15
Date: February 15, 2024
University Planning Workshop for Families and Students - Wednesday, February 28 @ 5:30PM (Online via Google Meet) - UCCD will be reviewing the next steps in the university planning process, in particular, a timeline of what to do between Spring of Grade 11 all the way to the end of Grade 12. This is a mandatory session for all Grade 11 students.
University Tours and Visits - as we're entering the second half of Grade 11, no doubt you've started to think (and probably plan) university tours and visits. Going to check out the universities is a great way to learn more about the university and whether or not it's the right fit for you. But how do you make the most of the visit? What are some of the key areas to focus your questions on? Some themes / questions to consider asking:
- Are clsses taught by professors or teaching assistants? How accessible are professors outside of the classroom?
- What is the average class size?
- How and when do incoming first-year students get advising on course selection?
- How often do students meet with academic advisors?
- What type of resources are available for students with learning differences?
- What types of research prospects do students have access to outside of the classroom?
- How does the school offer career guidance?
- Are internships or co-op opportunities avaialble through the university / college?
- What percentage of undergraduates have had an internship or research experience by the time they graduate?
- Are residences guaranteed for first-year students?
- What do students say about living and dining on campus?
- What do the campus and community feel like from a safety perspective?
And finally, questions to ask your tour guides about student life:
- When you first arrived, how did you get involved in life outside the classroom?
- How did you meet your friends? What do students do for fun here?
- Do many students attend athletic games?
- How does the school build community and foster cultural understanding?
- What are some of the school's main events or traditions?

About November Break... November Break is the perfect time to dedicate your creative energy and attention to writing drafts of any university application essays or supplements. Depending on where you’re applying to, you may be working on the following:
- UK Personal Statements
- USA Regular Decision application essays
- University of California Personal Insight Questions
- UBC Personal Profile
- McMaster University Health Sciences supplement
- Or more…
For those applying to the University of Toronto, we encourage you to submit your applications in advance of November Break as their priority deadline for Out-of-Province students is November 7. According to the University of Toronto, if you don’t apply by November 7, you will be bumped to Round 2 of their admissions cycle. After submitting your OUAC, it should take between 2-3 weeks before you receive an email from the University of Toronto to access their JoinUofT portal. It is through this portal where you’ll be able to access any supplemental applications as required, upload your transcript and check your application status.
For those only applying in Canada, ensure that you prepare and complete the required supplements for professional and cohort programs by your individual deadlines (e.g. UBC, UT for Engineering, Business, Arts and Architectural Studies, McMaster, Waterloo, etc.). Be clear that the supplements are your responsibility as only students have access to the supplements required, deadlines and the application system.
For those applying to the US, be aware of any earlier deadlines you may have, such as the University of Washington (November 15) and University of California (November 30).
The more efficient you are during the break, the more enjoyable the rest of the fall will be for you. Organization is key to not only success but maintaining well being, confidence and satisfaction in your endeavors.
We look forward to receiving your essay rough drafts at the end of the break and continuing to support you with your final applications.
Ordering Transcripts: As we continue with the university application journey, reporting grades to universities is a key component. There are typically two ways to do this: requesting formal transcripts to be sent to universities by Mulgrave and self-reporting your grades to universities (which can be you typing in your courses and grades into the university’s system OR uploading a copy of your transcript yourself into the university’s system - both are considered self-reporting, and the university will inform you which way they prefer). Regardless of which way is used to submit grades, the most important thing to do after applying to the universities of your choice is to check the individual universities student applicant portal. Many will let you know what is still missing, and/or what you still need to do. To learn more about what you should do and how to do it, check out this handy document that we put together just for you! Please read it carefully before requesting any transcripts!
Counsellor Meetings: This is a reminder that you need to meet with your counsellor regularly throughout the university application process. Please see "Scheduling Appointments with your University Counsellor" for instructions on how to make an appointment.

We're almost there! For the majority of you, your university applications are more or less complete. There may be a few stragglers with supplements being due in February (McMaster Health Sciences for one!). But essentially, we're at the point where your application is in the hands of the universities, and you can now focus on other things (like studying for Mocks!). You may also get communications from universities on things like updating grades, housing, acceptances, deposits and more. Please keep an eye on your emails! But also, we're at the point where you are now starting to get responese from the universities you applied to! If and when you do hear back from the universities, please let us know! We'd love to celebrate with you!
