James Rout

James Rout has more than 25 years of leadership experience in higher education, including teaching and learning, libraries, academic planning, and technology services. He is a PhD candidate in Educational Technology at Simon Fraser University, and has been awarded several national innovation awards - most recently an Award of Excellence and Innovation from the Canadian Network of Innovation in Education in 2020. 

Prior to joining BCIT, James was the Associate Vice-President, Learning Services and Information Technologies at Emily Carr University, where he led Information Technology Services, the Teaching and Learning Centre, and the Library and Archives departments. He has significant experience with campus development projects and with the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning environments, including the Summit Centre, Mediaworks, and Tech Collider at BCIT, as well as the new Emily Carr University campus, and the Kinnear Centre for Innovation and Creativity at The Banff Centre. 

As the Associate Vice-President, Education Support and Innovation at BCIT, James is responsible for a broad range of educational services, including instructional design, media production, AV services, virtual simulation and multimedia development, copyright and records management, library and archives services, learning commons, makerspaces, peer tutoring, the writing centre, entrepreneurship, and educational technology services. He is also active with community, industry and government, including serving on the Academic Governance Committee at the Centre for Digital Media. James is also a Co-Founder of the Frontier Collective, a coalition of industry leaders focused on growing investment, building skilled talent, and supporting diversity and inclusion in the tech sector.
