University Prep for Parents
As much as it is important for our graduates to be well-prepared for the next phase of their lives, whether that be post-secondary study or other endeavours, it is also critical for parents to also better understand what this change will bring.
Three parents of Mulgrave graduates (Alida Ali, Adriana Li, and Tori Sinclair) have kindly offered their time, insight and advice for a panel-style discussion. All participants will be invited to engage in the conversation and to share their thoughts and questions.
The following sessions are open to all Mulgrave parents, but will be most relevant for parents of Grade 11 and 12 students.
Wednesday, January 29th, 5:00-6:00pm: Preparing as Parents
Parents will learn more about the areas of their lives that will be most impacted by their child leaving home.
Monday, March 2nd, 5:00-6:00pm: Logistical Preparations
There are a number of administrative and practical tasks that should be completed prior to your child leaving home. Learn more about documentation and key to-dos in this session.
Monday, April 20th, 5:00-6:00pm: Supporting Your Child's Independence
As parents, we need to help set our children up for success...and then set them free! Learn more about key areas for student independence: self care, adapting to a new environment, and important skills to be acquired.
All sessions will take place at Mulgrave School in the Senior School Academic Centre.
Alida moved to Vancouver with her family in 2002 after living in Bangladesh, Pakistan, London and both the East-coast and West-coast of Canada. Her children joined Mulgrave in Grades 2 and 3, graduating in 2012 and 2013. They have since both graduated from university in the United States. Alida's professional background is in early childhood development and she was very involved as a parent in the school as class rep as well as other volunteer positions. She looks forward to a discussion with other parents about the journey towards letting their children go and hope to help others navigate this transition.
Adriana came to Vancouver in 2008 with her family, and they joined the school in 2010. Her elder daughter graduated last year, and the younger is currently in Grade 2. Adriana has been heavily involved with the Mulgrave Parent Association as a class rep, volunteering in the school library, and as a buddy family. She appreciates the positive and supportive approach of the Senior School leadership team and hopes this event will further those efforts. She also looks forward to sharing her experience and learning from other parents.
Tori's family is a blend of Kiwi and American roots, and has an international history having lived in Nevis, Singapore, New Zealand, and finally arriving in Canada in 2014. Her two daughters graduated from Mulgrave in 2017 and 2019. Tori worked on some of the school's biggest stage productions - Slayer and Peter Pan - and also helped to organise activities for both of her children's grad classes. There are things she wishes she knew when her daughters transitioned to university and is very happy to share her experiences to help out other parents!
