Our summer programmes for Grades 7-12 are designed to expand the boundaries of your teen's summer enrichment and learning throughout the month of July. You can choose from half day morning and afternoon camps, as well as some full day options. Explore the offerings by week below or download the Schedule-at-a-Glance on the right.

Week 1: July 8-12

1/2 Day Morning | 9:00am-12:00pm

 

Fencing (G1-7)

Through one of the most elegant, exhilarating and safest sports, students will learn discipline, coordination and sportsmanship. This camp is taught by one of Canada’s most decorated fencers, Igor Gantsevich (National, North and Pan American Champion, Pan American Games and World Cup Medalist). All students will receive a certificate of completion signed by Canadian National Team Coach Victor Gantsevich and Coach Igor Gantsevich. All necessary equipment will be provided for the camp. Please make sure your child is wearing comfortable athletic attire and clean athletic shoes (sandals, dress shoes, flip flops or crocs will not be permitted at camp).

Public Speaking for Leaders (G7-11)

Build confidence, practise proven tips, and develop public speaking skills. We offer a safe and fun environment to engage ALL students regardless of their level of comfort speaking in a group. Learn strategies to overcome any fears and express yourself confidently. The curriculum covers the essentials of public speaking and offers the opportunity to practise and deliver speeches, and get feedback from our experienced facilitators. Participants are encouraged to bring pens and a notebook.

Science Boost - Lab Writing (G7-10)

Do your lab writing skills need refining? Lab reports are the most frequent kind of document written in science courses and this half day camp offers you the opportunity to find out how to write them well. As well, there will be a focus on the scientific method, particularly testable/non-testable questions, using models to depict explanations, and formulating explanations backed by evidence. You will leave this camp with better understanding of how to put together a coherent report and will gain skills that can be applied at school and will complement your work in the sciences.

1/2 Day Afternoon | 12:30-3:30pm

Hiking & Survival Skills (G7-10)

This camp covers essential survival skills for anyone traveling in the backcountry around Vancouver. You will spend afternoons learning about your trip: how to recognise and avoid dangers, what’s in our emergency kits and how to use them, map reading and navigation skills. On Thursday afternoon, you will venture into the local mountains and prepare for one night under the stars. Every afternoon will be packed with useful information and skill building to give you the confidence to be comfortable in the outdoors and deal with any situation!

Business Bootcamp (G7-9)

*This is a two week course spanning weeks 1 and 2

Mulgrave’s Centre for Young Entrepreneurs and Changemakers is pleased to offer a “Business Bootcamp” for young adults entering Grades 7-9. This two-week intensive camp is aimed at early-stage entrepreneurs who are looking to strengthen their knowledge on effectively running a business. The course will be facilitated by students from UBC’s prestigious Sauder School of Business, and various guests from the local business community will provide workshops, presentations and mentorship.

Develop your International Baccalaureate (IB) writing skills by improving detail, form, and language usage. You will also work on your creative presentation and critical reading skills. Please bring a laptop or web-enabled tablet for this class. Either a PC or a Mac is acceptable. Course topics will be personalised to the needs to the group.

This camp is a consolidation and extension opportunity for students entering Grade 7 or 8 in September 2019. Revisit concepts from the Grade 6 and 7 curricula to ensure you are thoroughly prepared for the year ahead. Course topics will be personalised to the needs to the group.

ESL Sensory Writing and Imagery (G7-10)

Sensory details include sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. Good writers use the five senses to spark a reader's interest. This camp will give older students the skills to make their writing to jump off the page! As well as sensory writing, they will learn about metaphor, irony, and the ‘rule of three’ in their writing. Please note that this is camp for language acquisition and enjoyment. There will not be a written report of students’ progress.

Dolphin Kids - Ted-Style Public Speaking (G5-8)

*Please note this camp is for Grades 5-8 only. 

Gain confidence to express your ideas! Learn public-speaking tips and tricks to build your speaking skills with interactive activities and coaching. Students will learn:

  • How to brainstorm, research, and choose an engaging speech topic.
  • Expression strategies such as voice projection, gestures, posture, and tone.
  • How to give, receive, and integrate group feedback into their presentations.
  • How to manage anxiety, nervousness, stage fright, and build confidence to publicly present their speech at the end of the week!

All Dolphin Kids programs develop future-ready leaders through P.O.D:

  • The PLAY mindset through brainstorming, critical thinking challenges, and drama and art-based games.
  • Relationship and leadership skills with OTHERS through teamwork and collaborative activities.

Week 3: July 22-26

1/2 Day Morning | 9:00am-12:00pm

Photography & Digital Art (G7-10)

This is an opportunity to explore different kinds of photography: nature, macro,  figures in action, portraits, advertising photography and landscapes. Once you have your images, you will experiment with  image editing software to create interesting and beautiful pictures! You will discover new ways to manipulate and edit work and will discuss the ethics of photographic manipulation in today’s world. Please come to this camp with a device to take photographs (a phone is fine) and a laptop or iPad to edit with. You will be contacted nearer the time, with a list of free/trial software to download.

Win Your Audience (G7-10)

Public speaking can be tough, but it’s an important skill. We will create a safe and fun environment to engage ALL students regardless of your level of comfort speaking in a group. ESL Perfecting your Paragraphs (G7-10)

Writing in English is about structure as well as a great vocabulary and accurate grammar. This camp will explore the details of writing in a fun and enjoyable way. In this camp, students will develop their listening, speaking, reading, and general communication skills. This is an intensive English program that offers classes in the morning and allows students join a non-ESL camp in the afternoon to practice new English skills. Students will receive written feedback to guide their progress.

Mandarin Boost (G10-11)

This is an intensive academic camp for students entering G10-11 in September 2019 who wish to build and retain a strong Mandarin foundation for completing the Diploma Programme. This half day one week camp will focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing for foundations up to the G10 level. Course topics will focus on different themes covered in the Mandarin MYP programme.

Special Effects Makeup (G7-10)

Interested in stage or movie makeup? Or, maybe you just want to create something exceptional for Hallowe’en! You will learn how to create the basics such as bruises and scars and move on to advanced techniques using prosethises. With camp leaders from professional makeup artistry in the entertainment industry, this is going to be an exciting learning experience. Participants will receive a makeup kit with some supplies.

Bring your innovative business ideas to life! Students will learn how to:

  • Research and choose an engaging problem to solve (i.e. service or product).
  • Design, test, and develop a prototype for their business idea.
  • Write and present an elevator pitch for their business idea.
  • Give, receive, and integrate group feedback into their business idea.
  • Manage anxiety, nervousness, stage fright, and build the confidence to publicly present their business in a Dragons Den style presentation!

Zen Maker Camp: Remote Control Car (G7-10)

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) – Sampler Camp 4

From art, 3D design and 3D printing, to electronics, Minecraft, augmented reality and engineering projects, your kids will be introduced to this important area of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.  No experience necessary! It's a great way for your child to have fun while learning some really useful skills, helping prepare them for the future. Participants will build a remote control car that they can take home with them and that they can visually program. They will also be introduced to the powerful 3D design and modeling tool Fusion 360.

Credit Courses

Physics 11 - 4 weeks

This credit course starts at 8:30am and ends at 12:00pm. 

Physics 11 follows the prescribed learning outcomes from the BC Ministry. This is an excellent opportunity to fulfill your Physics 11 requirement in a compressed manner, allowing for greater scheduling flexibility throughout the school year.

When choosing camps, pick options for the grade your child will be entering in the upcoming academic year.

  • Participants must be registered directly by their parents or legal guardians. We cannot accept registration from agents or group bookings.
  • The Camp Director may, at her discretion, move participants into the English as a Second Language stream if their English is not to the fluency required to fully participate in their registered courses.
  • All camps are for enjoyment and skill development. Written reports of students’ progress will not be provided.
  • Before registering, please become familiar with our cancellation policy as stated below.
  • If you have more than one child to register, please enter them all during the same online registration session in order to receive the 10% sibling discount. You will need to enter information for each child one at a time.
  • If you have registered before, you can retrieve your information with your email and password. If you no longer have your password, you can request a password reset. Please follow the prompts from Active Network.

Cancellation Policies

  • We understand that sometimes cancellations are unavoidable, but we also need to be able to finalise our numbers to ensure a high quality of instruction.  Please know that each of the cancelled camps will be subject to a $50 administrative fee and cancellations after Wednesday June 12th cannot be refunded
  • Participants who choose not to complete the week of camp as a result of being moved into the English as a Second Language stream (at the discretion of the Camp Director, based on English fluency) are not eligible for a refund.

Business Bootcamp!

A new programme this summer, Mulgrave’s Centre for Young Entrepreneurs and Changemakers is pleased to offer a 'Business Bootcamp' for students entering Grades 7-12. Two sessions are offered of this two-week intensive camp aimed at early-stage entrepreneurs who are looking to strengthen their knowledge on effectively running a business.

Half Day Camp: $200
Full Day Camp: $400

Some specialised camps involve additional fees. These fees will be noted on the session description, as well as during the registration process.
