Last night’s Annual General Meeting of the Mulgrave School Society Board of Directors saw the presentation of reports by the Chair and Head of School, voting in of new and restanding members: Kate Hoodgendoorn, Magdalina Ivanova, and Malik Talib, and the appreciation of departing members: Helen Joannou and William Ko. The Board is now comprised of 13 volunteer directors. A full video recording of the Head of School AGM address and a link to our Report to the Community (2018-19) document will be circulated to all members of our community via email tomorrow.
The Board also put their long-planned succession plan in motion appointing Gopi Chande, long-standing Vice Chair, as the new Chair. Harry Wierenga stepped down from the position and has now assumed the Vice Chair role until a replacement is identified in the fullness of time.
Harry served on the Board as Treasurer from 1997 to 2002, supporting the school through the ‘great step forward’ as land was purchased and facilities built on Cypress Mountain. In 2012, a few years before the last of his three daughters graduated, Harry was invited back to Chair the Board.
“Harry is a remarkable Mulgravian whose family joined the school in 1996,” said John Wray, Head of School. “In his various roles on the Board, he has overseen the growth of the school, the planning of three major building projects, and most importantly, the establishment of Mulgrave as a leading international school. In independent schools, the relationship between the Board Chair and the Head of School is a key one, and Harry has given me his unwavering support throughout his term.”
Gopi’s family has been at Mulgrave since 2009 when their daughter joined Kindergarten. Her children are now in Grades 7 and 10. Gopi is Vice President of Finance at TELUS and volunteers her expertise and energy as an active member of the community. She joined the Mulgrave Board in 2013 and has also served as Chair of the Mulgrave Volunteer Parent Association.
