G5 Girls Basketball at St. John's School

On Monday afternoon the Grade 5 Girls basketball team played their first two games of the season at St. John’s School. The girls were very excited and energised, and they were ready to put the skills they have been learning during practices into play. During both of the games, the girls communicated well, made many successful passes and moved the ball down the court effectively. They were able to switch quickly between defensive and offensive play, successfully covering opposing players when on defence, and being ready to move the ball quickly on offence. This great communication and teamwork lead the team to two wins to start the season off strong. We are very proud coaches and are looking forward to our next game on January 21st here at Mulgrave. Come on out and cheer us on! Have a restful winter break and happy holidays to you all.

Upper School Athletes of the Month - December

Congratulations to our four new Athletes of the Month for December 2018.

Sophie MB (G10) was the high scorer and tournament MVP for the Varsity girls basketball team earlier this month. She has a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and terrific 3-point shooting which are critical to the Varsity girls’ success.

Aleksei R (G10) was the Varsity boys’ player of the game in their championship game at their most recent tournament and is known for his excellent rebounding, strong defense, high commitment and is incredibly coachable.

Mikkah D (G9) is one of the youngest members of the Varsity girls basketball team but has shown the most improvement. She is an excellent defender with great vision. She has started several games for the Varsity girls and has guarded the other teams' best player (while in grade 9!).

Finally, Kaiden T (G9) is the captain and leader of the JV boys basketball team. He is their main playmaker and made several clutch shots in their most recent tournament - were he was named a tournament All-Star.

Well done everyone and GO TITANS GO!!!

G6 Boys Basketball at Mulgrave

The Grade 6 Boys had a successful first set of matches on Wednesday afternoon, finishing with a 2-1 record on the day. The team competed hard at both ends of the court, hustling on the defensive and finding some timely scoring on the offensive side. The team was led in scoring by Amir M., who showed some polished finishing techniques by the basket and on the perimeter. Defensive stalwarts Jacob S., Finn N-W., and Ashton G. continuously made it tough for their opponents and rebounded the ball intensely. We are pleased with our first set of matches, but know that there is lots of room for growth. I look forward to seeing how this group flourishes as the season moves ahead.

G3-7 Swim Meet at Watermania

The Junior School hit the pool in Richmond this week, competing in the Beth Heras Memorial Relay Meet on Monday. It was a great event, where all races were made up of teams of four. We had an interesting mix of students, many of whom were first-timers, including twelve Grade 3 students! The team raced in hard and thus our swimmers were exhausted after their events. The students were led by our encouraging Grade 7 students, who not only demonstrated great racing techniques but were honorary coaches - working with our youngest athletes. The outcome was excellent; strong, competitive swims, further development of techniques, and a chance to get our first races for the season out of the way. The team represented Mulgrave incredibly well and all team members should be proud of their efforts. A big thank you to coach Amlani, who also enjoyed her first swim meet and the craziness that comes along with it. We look forward to our next meet in January at St. George’s.

Varsity Girls Basketball Win Gold @ Her Hoops Tournament

This past weekend, our Varsity Girls basketball team traveled over to St. John's School to participate in their annual Her Hoops tournament. They opened up the the event against Pender Harbour and got off to a fast start, scoring 25 points in the first quarter. Our girls were well en route to a dominant victory. Player of the Game was Karina Edmonds, who had the highest scoring game of her young basketball career.

In the semi-final we faced off against a physical team from Khalsa. Although outmatched in size, our girls used their excellent conditioning and pressure defense to open up a 20 point lead halfway through that we never relinquished, winning 83-63. Player of the Game was Kat Georgi, who finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 6 steals.

In the final, we battled against our old rival WPGA, who also happened to be considerably bigger in size than our players. Our girls didn't let this bother them and dribbled with unrelenting pressure on defense to force many early turnovers. On the offensive side, it was "raining 3s" as our girls knocked down 14 three point shots (Lindsay, Sophie and Celina all hit four 3 pointers each) to take home the gold medal and tournament crown with a convincing 71-26 victory. Player of the Game and tournament MVP was Celina M. while Sophie M-B was selected as a tournament all-star.
