May 30, 2019 Over the last month or so, we've released a series of videos covering the highlights of our Strategic Plan Update: university acceptances, our education programme, the new West Wing, and the upcoming East Wing project.
The Update, and follow-up parent sessions with John Wray, prompted a few questions. And we have answers... Click on the image above to learn more about campus plan, and more specifically the upcoming construction of the East Wing and future use of the previous Early Learning Centre.
We couldn't fit everything you wanted to know into one video, so watch for more over the coming weeks. Just before May Break, our Grade 5 students celebrated their learning at their annual Exhibition. The projects are a culmination of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and offer students the chance to pursue something they are passionate about, put their research and social skills to work, and challenge themselves to use creative expression.
While some students had considered topics and approaches for quite some time, classes really got down to business after Spring Break when they dedicated class time to one of three provocations: UN sustainable development goals, global issues and storytelling through images, and connecting global and local issues. Students worked diligently in groups to execute their project. Team work can be challenging and was the basis of many student reflections:
"The most difficult part was trying to settle on one idea. We would all fight, but after lots of talking and weighing our options in terms of materials and possibilities, we came to a compromise," Armin D.
"I learned a really important life lesson from Exhibition: there will be people that don't get along when working in a group, but you can't get worked up about it, you have to go with the flow," Kai K.
The Grade 5 teaching team offers their congratulations to their students: "It was such a pleasure to work with such a committed and engaged bunch of students who were so eager to share their understanding and new insights at every step of the way. You were truly inspiring. Congratulations, Grade 5, you rocked!" Grade 4 students also recently completed their Mini-Exhibition projects, presenting them to parents and other students at a science-fair type event. This project, which focuses on natural processes (such as natural disasters), relates to key concepts studied in class and starts to prepare students for their culminating project in Grade 5. You may have heard the buzz around the school...we have some new friends in our Library!
During the installation we had a chance to speak with a local bee biologist to learn a little more about these amazing creatures. A few quick facts:
We're not just indebted to bees for honey; these incredible creatures are truly the custodians of the food chain. A large proportion of human crops are pollinated by bees along with many fruits, seeds and plants eaten by other animals.

I recently got the opportunity to go to the Canada Wide Science Fair in Fredericton, New Brunswick where I competed against 500 brilliant and competitive minds, all sharing one thing in common - a humongous passion for science! The highlight of this experience was meeting new people from all across Canada - even Nunavut! From a small town on Prince Edward Island, to the big city of Toronto, people of all ages (Grades 7-12), were friendly, kind-hearted, and very interesting. But the atmosphere was not all nicey-nice; the Science Fair also brought blood, sweat, and tears because there was some serious competitive fury in the air - you could practically smell it the moment you walked in the hall! Not all work and no play...Jenna and her fellow young scientists also had the chance to explore Fredericton. From shiny prize medals to valuable scholarship money available for the taking, the competition was fast and furious. But in the end, it was science that won the biggest prize: so many epic science projects.
When deciding what to research at the beginning of this journey (Mulgrave Science Fair), the first two things that came to my mind were food and candy - two of my most favourite things in the entire world. I love the Food Network and watching an episode of Cupcake Wars made me wonder how people make food choices, and whether or not different colours impact the foods they choose to buy and eat. I used Smarties to investigate this further because, well, who doesn't love Smarties? Also, Smarties have lots of different colours but they all taste the same. Understanding a subject's favourite and least favourite Smartie choices would help me learn more about how people make certain types of food decisions.
Going to the Canada Wide Science Fair not only taught me how big the subject of science really is, but also important life skills that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I feel like my journey to New Brunswick has given me more confidence, independence, competitive fury, and desire to succeed in science, as well as the ability to be a risk-taker and dig deep when times are challenging. Going forward, I want to use these skills and apply them to my next adventure! By Winnie Z and Carrie X, G6 Leadership Team The G6 Leadership Team created House Wednesdays to increase school spirit in the Junior School. With the help of many teachers, we provide opportunities for kids to connect with friends and make new ones. We want House Wednesdays to create enthusiasm and friendly competition, and inspire students to earn house points. Also, these events give the G6 Leadership Team opportunities to volunteer in our community.
