Have questions about the Strategic Plan and our progress to-date? Please submit them via email and we'll include it in a Q&A wrap up in a few weeks. Last weekend, more than 200 educators from various corners of the globe gathered at Mulgrave for conversations centred on improving learning across the three IB Programmes (the IB Continuum). The two-day conference included school visits to various IB schools, including Mulgrave and public schools in North Vancouver and West Vancouver, as well as workshops and keynote speakers.
The Changemakers and ISABC Leadership team wrapped up their year-long partnership with Britannia Elementary with bouldering at the Hive Downtown and a tour of Britannia's local neighbourhood. Here are a few student reflections on their experience: "Britannia has a family room, with a refrigerator for families who don't always have enough to eat. This was really memorable for me because I realise that we really take for granted (by we, I mean West Vancouver, and the 3% that makes up the 'wealthiest' population of Vancouver) the food that we eat every day, the clothes on our backs that we wear to be 'better' than the people around us, the cars we drive, the activities we do, the vacations we go on. The list goes on and on. And life is so much more than what type of phone you have. It's the people around you. The kids at Britannia know that." "What really had an impact on me was the socio-economic gap, and how real it is, even in a place like Vancouver. As we took the tour around their neighbourhood, I began to understand how fortunate we are.
What began to make an even bigger impact is that other than the economic status, the children and the community are very similar to West Vancouver. As I got closer with the kids at Britannia, I realised that we had similar likes and dislikes, and even humour. This made me realise that the stereotypes of different socio-economic statuses are blown way out of proportion, and that they create barriers between people. Hearing about the times that their community came together for good causes was memorable for me. Overall, this trip had a big impact on me and my view of different places." By Diana Ferreria and Bambi Roy, Upper School Faculty From April 25-27, six Mulgrave students spent their evenings at the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library to compete at Hullabaloo, a youth poetry slam competition held as part of the 9th Annual 'Verses' Festival of Words. Grade 10 students Soo Gyung, Alicia, Sahra, Khayali, and Shyree, and Julia from Grade 11 (not pictured) participated in both individual and collaborative slam competitions for their first time, and were able to learn from other youth poets from all over British Columbia. These students tested their courage by presenting personal and emotional pieces for strangers, and they supported others doing the same.

Last weekend, 59 of our Middle School students travelled to Whistler for the Cantando Music Festival. MS Jazz Band, MS Concert Band, G8/9 Choir, G7 Choir, and MS Vocal Jazz all performed in front of panels of music education professionals and received valuable feedback.
The weekend was filled with performances from other schools, professional ensembles, and specialised choral and instrumental workshops designed to help hone skills. Students met musicians from different schools across British Columbia and Alberta and the choirs got to take part in a mass performance of more than one thousand singers at the end of the festival.
We were lucky enough to experience a full array of Whistler weather during our time at the festival - mostly sun…and even a half hour of snow! Overall, it was a wonderful trip and we left inspired, with deeper friendships, and filled with fresh enthusiasm for music! Artsapalooza, our annual Middle School Performing Arts extravaganza is fast approaching!
On the evening of Tuesday, May 7th, the work of all Middle School Performing Arts students will be showcased. Join us in the Linda Hamer Theatre for an incredible display of dance and music from Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, and India.
