April 11, 2019 Getting creative with clay in the new West Wing art studios, the inaugural MCEC session, and Jump Rope for Heart! Check out a few photo highlights from this week at Mulgrave. It's National Volunteer Week. As a non-profit organisation, Mulgrave would not be the incredible place that it is without the support of the many volunteers that tirelessly contribute to events, day-to-day operations, our long-term strategic planning, and more. There are not enough 'thank yous' to express our gratitude! While many of our volunteers are very visible to students and parents, there are also groups and individuals that work behind the scenes. One such volunteer is Nabila Pirani, co-chair of our Alumni Advisory Board and member of the Mulgrave Advisory Board. Nabila graduated from Mulgrave in 2004 as Head Student of our first graduating class, and now holds degrees from UBC, Columbia, and the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. She is currently a lawyer with Lawson Lundell LLP. The Alumni Advisory Board was officially established in 2017, but for a few years prior, Nabila and a group of alum met with the school every few months to chat about related matters. Talking about their work, she emphasises that the term alumni and the efforts of the Alumni Advisory Board don't just refer to Mulgrave graduates.
"We're addressing alumni in the broadest sense of the word - parents, former faculty, staff, and students - from all the years. Maybe it's the poli-sci grad talking, but I believe that institutional memory and history are so important. I try to bring my and other students' early experiences at our school into conversations about our vision for the alumni - I think where we are now as a school is amazing, but we also shouldn't forget where we have come from when we consider our future."
We are pleased to confirm our school term and holiday dates for the 2020-21 academic year. Please click here to access the PDF and to save it for your records. As a reminder, all of our calendars can be found on our website and are best accessed directly here. The calendar for 2020-21 is virtually identical to previous years. If you are new to the school please familiarise yourself with the calendar because, while students work the same number of days, the pattern is a little different from local public and other independent schools. The main difference at Mulgrave is the presence of mid-term, one-week breaks in May and November. These are important to us from a learning and educational point of view but they do also provide the opportunity for families to take week-long, out-of-peak season breaks. Do, however, remember that for our Senior School (G10-12) students, these weeks are considered 'reading' breaks and they will have assignments to complete during this time (which of course can be completed anywhere in the world!).
This Friday marks the last day of winter uniform in the Junior School. If you've found that those navy shorts are a little small after winter growth spurts, be sure to stop by the MStore to see what they have available. Lots of new navy socks are also in stock, as are umbrellas for these rainy days, and 1/4 zip pullovers for the Upper School. The IB Diploma Programme demands organisation. Not only is self-management overtly declared as one of the Approaches to Learning skills, it's just simply required when it comes to juggling the commitment of academics, breadth requirements, outside interests, and a teenage social life. Nick H, G12, has it down pat. Not only is he nearing completion of the full IB Diploma Programme, he's been training as an elite level swimmer for the last three years, recently placing #5 in Canada in the 50m backstroke and #8 in the country for the 100m backstroke in his age group. And while he acknowledges that he may miss out on some "normal teenage stuff", he does still get time to himself and with friends.
San Jose, we have a problem... Grade 10 Mulgrave students, Roy Z and Victor T, along with two other friends, learned the true meaning of perseverance as they prepared for the San Jose Tech Challenge.
After five months of preparation, the team was finally ready to officially test their built-from-scratch hovercraft, the challenge set forth by The Tech Museum of Innovation. As one of the more than 700 teams participating, they built over 50 prototypes to make sure their craft could handle the rigours of the course, learning through experimentation and failure.
While they'd planned every aspect of their build, the seemingly simple matter of getting to San Jose proved to be a bit more challenging.
