INTRODUCING THE MCEC

Mulgrave students have great ideas and initiative in spades. Through past issues of Connexions, you've likely read about a few students who have turned those ideas into reality, be they in the form of entrepreneurial ventures or social change initiatives.


To better support these students, and further advance our school's strategic priorities of personalised, enriched, applied and extended educational programming, we're proud to introduce the new Mulgrave Centre for Young Entrepreneurs and Changemakers (MCEC).


Housed in the former Early Learning Centre, the MCEC will operate outside school hours as a place for our young entrepreneurs and changemakers to incubate, learn, and do. Some structured presentations and workshops will be offered, as well as open, collaborative work time.

 

We're very excited to launch the programme with a special speaker at 4:30pm on Tuesday, April 9th. Charles Chang, a self-described 'serial entrepreneur' and Mulgrave Board Member will share his story and some of the things he's learned as he built up the award-winning Vega, as well as his current venture, Lyra Growth Partners. Grade 7-12 students should RSVP here for the event or to indicate their interest in future sessions.


As the programme ramps up, we will welcome parents, alumni, and community business and social enterprise leaders to share their time and experience. If you have expertise in areas such as marketing and branding, business development, design thinking, tech and innovation, circular and green economies, or networking and public speaking, we'd love to hear from you! Please email Gaby Barnes, the Centre's Coordinator, if you're able to volunteer to lead a session with students.

MULGRAVE MYTHBUSTERS
Earlier this year, we shared the first of our Mulgrave Mythbuster videos (it was about the IB Diploma Programme and how it does or doesn't limit fields of post secondary study). This time, we're tackling the myth that the rigour of the IB Programme demands that students forgo other interests and social activities. SHANGHAI EXCHANGE

Two weeks in Shanghai, jam-packed with cultural experiences, language learning, and amazing food...sounds like the perfect Spring Break, no? In fact, it was the privilege of 10 of our Middle School exchange participants. 

 

In January, Mulgrave families hosted students from Shanghai United International School. SUIS families reciprocated in March, reuniting friends from the first half of the exchange. In Shanghai, our students took in many local sights, participated in a variety of organised activities, and shadowed classes at the school, but it was the immersive nature of the experience that created the most impact.

"When I wanted to buy something, but found it hard to understand what the salespeople were saying, it made me a little confused. Other times, I did really well and was able to understand what they were saying and then answer back in Mandarin. Those little moments were the most fulfilling for me."

"I was able to enhance my Mandarin speaking and listening, as well as try new things. I had many different types of food, such as Xiao Long Bao! I also made new friends and visited many amazing viewpoints, tourist attractions and buildings."

SHARING TALENTS

Just before Spring Break, Grade 2 student Milana B participated in an International Rhythmic Gymnastics competition, winning gold in Rope Routine and placing first overall for her level (BC 2A).

 

To celebrate her success and showcase her talent, Milana was asked to perform two of her routines for her classmates. The timing also happened to coincide with her PHE class' work with skipping ropes; her performance was a great opportunity to demonstrate a different use for the rope. Milana's strong movements and graceful presence captivated her audience, and when asked by a peer, "How did you learn those cool moves?" she replied, "I practice, practice, practice, and I never give up."

Former Rhythmic Gymnast and Mulgrave JS PHE teacher, Mrs. Straub, was also moved to see such a familiar talent in one of her students. "What she presented today was amazing," she said. And as someone who understands the importance of coaching, she was excited to hear Milana's coach competed for the Ukrainian National Team. "I see a very bright future for Milana."


Congratulations, Milana, on this great accomplishment and thank you for sharing your talent with your classmates!

Help our Young Moviemakers LEAP Elective students get to the final judging round in the WorkSafe BC 2019 Student Safety Video Contest! They've submitted four videos and are in the running for a cut of the $100,000 prize money. Last year, one of our films won the Junior Division...let's make it two in a row.

CHORAL CONCERT: APRIL 8

Join us on Monday, April 8th from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Linda Hamer Theatre for the Cross Divisional Choir Concert. Singers from Grades 2 to 12 will perform together within and across divisions!

This year's concert is themed along the lines of an Emily Dickinson poem, the text of which is in two of the evening's pieces. "Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without the words, and never stops at all."

 

The concert kicks off a number of events in April: the Upper School choirs are heading to various festivals, Senior School Chamber Choir is off to the Kiwanis Choral Festival, and the Middle School Choirs will participate in the Kiwanis and Whistler Cantando Festivals.

STRATEGY UPDATES WITH JOHN WRAY: APRIL 16, 17, 18

Over the break, we mailed out a hard copy of our strategic plan update. We invite you to join a session with Head of School, John Wray on April 16th, 17th or 18th to further discuss and provide feedback. 

 

While these progress updates are typically provided via the Annual Report, this year has already brought a wealth of accomplishments, and project plans are underway on some significant initiatives. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Please RSVP here for a session of your choosing.

UPPER SCHOOL GLOBAL LUNCH: APRIL 17

On April 17th, Upper School students have the opportunity to celebrate the many cultures within our school community through the wonderful medium of food!

 

Volunteer parents will be cooking and baking up a storm, and arranging traditional dishes through their favourite restaurants. For $10, students can try cuisines from many nations. Click here to purchase a ticket.

RUGBY 7S MIT: APRIL 18

We're hosting the annual Rugby 7s Mulgrave Invitational Tournament on Thursday April 18th. Eight schools will compete for trophies in the Junior (G8-10) and Senior (G11-12) divisions.

 

Rugby 7s tournaments include several consecutive 20-minute games; this year there will be 22 games played from roughly 10:00am to 5:00pm on the turf field. There won't be a dull moment - come cheer on your Titans!

SUMMER PROGRAMME: REGISTER NOW

Spring Break flew by and now it's time to start thinking about activities for July!

 

We launched our Summer Programme in early March with great success. Registrations are flowing in and some of our most popular classes are already well-subscribed.

 

Our Grade 1-6 Programme is full of variety with camps to get brains and bodies engaged, and creative juices flowing. With offerings such as movie making, presentation skills, sparkly crafts, musical theatre, team games, and brain teasers, there's something for everyone.

Students entering Grades 7-12 also have lots of opportunities to enrich their learning and try new things. We have academic boost courses available, and even a full credit Physics 11 class. New this year is a two-week Business Bootcamp for budding entrepreneurs.

 

We're also offering sessions specifically for students that are not fluent in English. If you have friends or family visiting from abroad, this is the perfect opportunity for them to experience Mulgrave!

PUMPKIN FEST NEEDS YOU!

Do you love community building and want to help plan this year's PumpkinFest event? PumpkinFest 2019 is looking for volunteer event planners, social media managers, in-design experts and many other key roles to ensure the event's success. The planning committee kick-off meeting will be held in mid-April.
