INDIGENOUS LEARNING
Image

By Drew Vodrey, MYP Individuals & Societies Curriculum Coordinator and Teacher

On the Family Day long weekend, nine staff members braved the cold in Winnipeg, Manitoba and Shoal Lake, Ontario for professional development. The focus was on the path towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples here in Canada and within our Mulgrave community.

We went to Winnipeg for several reasons. First, it has the largest Indigenous population of any major city in Canada and, as such, it has a unique history and perspective on the reconciliation process. It is also home to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) and the Canadian Museum of Human Rights (CMHR), which we strongly recommend visiting.

Furthermore, Mulgrave has a connection to the area surrounding Winnipeg; Ms. Teibert, Upper School Teacher & Indigenous Education Coordinator,

lived and taught at Iskatewizaagegan #39 Independent First Nation for two years and has maintained strong links with the community. Her Mulgrave students have also connected with her past Iskatewizaagegan classes over the last few years. For these reasons, Winnipeg was the ideal place for us to further grow our understanding of Indigenous experiences, perspectives, and the ideals of reconciliation.

On Monday, Grade 10 students celebrated the culminating task of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) - the Personal Project.

This student-centred exploration encourages the practise and strengthening of Approaches to Learning skills, connections between classroom learning engagements and personal passions, and the development of interests for lifelong learning.

During the afternoon event, Grade 10s showcased their final products and discussed their project journey with students from across the school, parents and teachers. Topics were diverse, ranging from nutrition to design, and the arts to service.

Tessa R summed up her project experience (she spearheaded a head shave event to raise funds and awareness for children's cancer research) through a six word memoir: "I became bold and went bald".

Kudos to all Grade 10 students who, through their personal project, pursued their passions, took risks and grew not only as learners, but also as people.

KICKING OFF THE RUGBY SEASON

The South African Rugby 7s team received a warm welcome on Tuesday from an enthusiastic crowd of Mulgrave students, parents and faculty. The defending champs were all smiles as they led more than 100 students through drills before packed stands. The Senior School rugby squad also received special hands-on instruction from some of the sport's best. The team wrapped up their visit signing autographs (we have quite a few pairs of lucky cleats out there!), taking photos, and chatting with the local press. Check out the video above for some highlights and This Week in Photos for a few pics.

The following day, our Grade 3 rugby players also had an amazing experience downtown with the Canadian 7s team. They did a little training, got autographs, and even had a photo op with the World Rugby HSBC trophy.

Now, the big questions is...who are you cheering for this weekend? All the info on the big event can be found here.

CELEBRATING SPRING

There may still be a few snowflakes flying around out there, but make no mistake...Spring is coming! You need look no further than our beautifully decorated halls to know that's the case.

A big thank you to the parent volunteers that came in last weekend to add cheery blooms, vibrant colours, and traditional Haft Seen displays to our halls.

Today, our students and faculty were treated to a delicious taste of Navroz, the Ismaili New Year celebration. Cake and sherbet (a sweet drink) were on offer at lunchtime, thanks to our generous Ismaili parent community. As you can imagine, the smiles were as plentiful as the desserts!

And, we look forward to seeing you all at the Norouz celebration on Friday from 4:00-6:00pm. The programme is packed with wonderful student performances and activities for all ages. Our gratitude goes out to our Iranian families, who have put so much effort into sharing their culture with all of us.

SPIRIT WEEK: MAKING CHANGE, CHANGING LIVES
Image

Upper School Spirit Week is coming up, and it's all about making change in our own backyard. Our focus this year is on raising awareness and engagement for issues and barriers faced by communities in our Downtown Eastside, including mental health, homelessness, and the effects of the opioid crisis.

Next week, students can partake in a number of activities to learn more and show their support. Don't miss out on pre-ordering Spirit Week Merchandise (items include local honey, candles and lip balm from Hives for Humanity) and the Japadog lunch! Full details are available on the TMC Student News website.
