Happy New Year!

No, it's not quite Friday yet...we've moved Connexions to Thursdays as a result of parent feedback. We understand wanting to receive this information earlier in the week and we're happy to accommodate. This new schedule also allows us to share last minute reminders about the many things that happen on campus on Fridays. If you've gotten into the habit of reading the newsletter with your Saturday morning coffee, we hope you'll just flag it in your email and continue!

Thanks for reading,

Nadine Pettman
Communications Manager

WELCOME TO THE WEST WING!

The first day back at school after a break is always high-energy. It's great reconnecting with friends and teachers, and sharing tales from time away. This week, many of our students had the added excitement of settling into their new West Wing learning spaces.

A big thank you to our Facilities and IT teams who worked many days over the winter break to ensure the spaces were ready in time. And to all of the faculty and support staff that put in extra hours unpacking mountains of boxes and putting extra care and attention into setting up classrooms - thank you, it all looks amazing!

25TH ANNIVERSARY RE-CAP

We know you may have missed the coverage on our 25th Anniversary celebration right before the break - to sum it up, It was quite a party! Click on the image above for some video highlights.

The event was a great opportunity to walk down memory lane with alumni and their families, as well as past faculty and administrators. It was also a wonderful celebration of what the school has become and where we are headed. Amidst the chatter and student performances, attendees were also treated to a first look at the new West Wing - the best birthday present we could have asked for!

"Over the past 25 years, we have had the good fortune of forward-looking leadership," says John Wray, Head of School. "Our founding families had the foresight to purchase this land and we are deeply indebted to the many Mulgrave families that have contributed to the MPower Campaign for our West Wing expansion, as well as the Inspire Campaign that built our Senior School. People often come to our campus and say 'Wow'. And it is impressive. But, a great education is not only about great facilities. Great education is about great teachers, great programmes and of course, the most fantastic young people. I look forward to seeing that all come together in our newest space."

For more on Mulgrave's early years, click here for a series of videos  featuring Linda Hamer, our Founding Head of School.

And, of course, there was the excitement of the annual Alumni Basketball Game. For the first time in many years, the Alum Girls took victory from our Seniors...but the Mulgrave Senior Boys did their coaches proud, winning out over the Alum. Stay tuned for some video footage and commentary from our alum.

THE POWER OF EDUCATION

By Ryan L, G10

In November, my family and I had the opportunity to visit rural villages in Uganda with WaterSchool, a non-profit organisation. This organisation is fighting water-borne illnesses by teaching the importance of good sanitation, hygiene and clean drinking water in villages, schools and health centres.

Water projects abound in Africa, but WaterSchool is unique as it focuses on educating communities, with local Ugandans teaching solutions to this massive problem. The trip opened my eyes to the difficulties in developing countries and what is needed to reduce these waterborne diseases which, on average, kill a child every 90 seconds.

WaterSchool has improved accessibility to clean water for hundreds of thousands of people without building complicated infrastructure. When people have access to clean water and are healthy because of their hygiene practices, they have more time and money to invest in small businesses, farming, and other activities that drive their communities forward.

I was surprised by the power of education, and how thankful people were that WaterSchool had taught them what to do, instead of doing it for them. The pride and joy in being able to change their own lives was amazing. WaterSchool's unique method creates permanent change in a sustainable and economical way.

CHECK YOUR SPAM

It's good practise to check your email spam folder from time-to-time. Mulgrave uses a number of different apps and programmes to send email and if those providers make changes to their servers, your email host could question the safety of the sender.

Email can also end up in spam if it's sent to a large number of people, or if you've not opened or have deleted email from the sender in past.

Simply pop into your spam folder periodically and see what's in there. You can mark Mulgrave-related emails as 'not spam' or from a 'safe sender' to avoid ongoing issues.

Our Varsity Girls and Boys basketball teams both participated in the R.E. Mountain tournament over the Christmas break. Our Varsity Girls won gold with convincing victories over the host school (69-45) and Langley fundamental (61-51) while our Varsity boys took home bronze with a dominating performance over Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School (84-45).

Both teams look to continue their winning ways heading into the ISAA Championships this upcoming weekend. The boys tournament will be hosted at Mulgrave (click here for the schedule) with the girls away at York House School.
