FULL OF GRATITUDE...AND COOKIES!

Our hearts (and bellies!) are so full of gratitude. Thank you to all of the amazing bakers, contributors and energetic volunteers for the unbelievable Baking Buffet and Staff Appreciation Lunch on Wednesday. There aren't enough words to express our appreciation...but some of us gave it a go on twitter at #mulgravebakingbuffet2018

We know these events don't just come together with the wave of a magic spatula, so extra special thanks to Mallora R and Andrea V, the dynamic MVP duo that led the charge.

We also send a big shout out to the elves that decked Mulgrave's halls over the weekend! The school looks so festive and it's tough not to hum a little holiday tune as you come through the doors. We know this is a massive job - thank you to MVPs Parisa C and Shima F, and their team of volunteers, for making our days merry and bright.

A SNEAK PEEK AT THE WEST WING
Image

The official ribbon cutting and opening of the West Wing will be at our 25th Anniversary event on December 20th, but last weekend MPower donors were treated to a sneak peek tour led by members of our Senior Leadership Team.

Families previewed some of the most incredible areas of the new wing, including the ELC tricycle track and child-sized washrooms, Art and Design Studio, Middle School spaces, and the rooftop playground. Mother Nature served up a spectacular day and beautiful vistas!

A CANNABIS-FREE ZONE

With the recent legalisation of cannabis, Mulgrave's leadership team has taken a close look at the school's related policies. After great consideration of our school values, responsibilities, and the law, we have updated our documents to reflect the following stance:

As a PK-12 educational community it is our responsibility to deliver the message that despite its legality, we regard cannabis as a potential stepping stone for young people to illegal and more dangerous drugs.  Therefore, cannabis use and possession has no place in our school or at school events.

In addition to updates in the Smoking, Drug and Alcohol Policy, the Parent and Student Handbook has also been fully reviewed. The new content will also be included in our 2019-20 re-enrolment documents. If you have questions or concerns about any of the material, please reach out to your Divisional Principal.

AN ENCHANTING BOOK FAIR

If you thought you spotted a little sprite or gnome last week, you likely did! The Enchanted Forest Book Fair took over the library with incredible decor, Scholastic book sales and classroom wish bins full of books.

And the results are pure magic:

  • 618 books donated to classrooms and already in use
  • 2C edged out the Junior School class competition at the very end to win a civvies day
  • Early Years hit their 150 book goal and all students get a civvies day
  • 50% of students voted in the design competitions
  • Half of all Grade 2 and 3 students entered the design competition
  • All 30 of the parent volunteer roles were filled within 48 hours of the request
  • 20 Grade 6 Leadership students and a dozen Middle School Ambassadors volunteered as mascots all week long
  • 70 prizes were awarded to students (see the Book Fair website for details)
  • 7 students chose to donate their prize books to their teacher's wish bin
  • 60% of all sales proceeds are credited to the library for future Scholastic purchases...that means a lot more books are coming our way!

MVP volunteers Chia C and Helen L worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen but are quick to share the credit. "The volunteers blew us away; they signed up to help right away," says Chia. "And the level of student enthusiasm was so high. Participation was amazing on all fronts!"

OUR KTEAM'S GOT 'FIRE'

The world of K-Pop is exploding into mainstream music and dance culture, and our students certainly aren't going to be left behind!

Initiated by Aileen Z (G12), Mulgrave's KTeam recently filmed their own video, a cover of 'Fire'. Click on the image above to check it out.

Aileen fell in love with this energetic style of dance by chance. Wanting to take hip hop in Grade 8, she registered for K-Pop by accident. "The music is different and super upbeat and happy," she explains. "The melodies are more interesting, and my sister and I got hyped up by it. I love that the dance is really contemporary, and in sync, but everyone gets cameos."

Since starting the club two years ago, the group has grown to eight dancers. "Six of us are graduating this year," laments Aileen. "I'm really hopeful that our two Grade 9 dancers will keep it going - they are already taking on more responsibility to keep it alive."

Filming of the video was done by Ken Y (G12). "I've always wanted to do a music video so I jumped at the chance when Aileen asked. After researching the K-Pop genre, I decided to use a drone to get some of the cool camera angles and movements."

"The film was a collaborative effort, and we all took on different roles to make it happen over the November break," adds Aileen. "We debuted at Mulgrads Got Talent, and everyone seemed to love it!"

VARSITY BOYS TAKE SILVER
Image

By: Coach Prior & Coach Leduc

This past weekend, our Varsity boys participated in the ISAA Senior Boys basketball tournament at Glenlyon Norfolk School in Victoria, BC. The tournament was a seven team draw with independent schools from all over the province. Our boys finished 2nd in the tournament, losing a hard fought battle in the championship game. This is Mulgrave's best finish ever at this event!

The game was a great learning experience for our young squad, and they played their hearts out. Isaac M and Jed D were named tournament all-stars. Jed showed athleticism unlike any other player in the gym, allowing him to get to the basket convincingly and to make great defensive stops at the other end. And our point guard and floor general, Isaac, averaged close to 30 points a game and distributed the ball with amazing vision. The team is clearly ready for the rest of our very exciting season ahead.
