November 23, 2018 The school was buzzing this week (and we're not just talking about the clippers at the Bold To Go Bald head shave event!)...click through to the Connexions page on our website for photo highlights of West Wing construction progress, World Scholar's Cup Tournament of Champions, and more. On Wednesday evening, the Mulgrave School Society held its Annual General Meeting. The meeting is a function of our volunteer Board of Directors, and serves to inform Society members of key activities of the preceding year. Board Chair, Harry Wierenga, and Head of School, John Wray, both addressed the audience.
John spoke to the school's business fundamentals, enrolment, human resources, facilities, risk mitigation, and most importantly, the education provisions encapsulated in our 2020 Strategic Plan.
"As a school, and as school leaders, we recognise that the pace of change in the world is accelerating and while the essential core of the current PK-12 education will continue to exist for the foreseeable future, our school will need to be agile and flexible and our education be adapted to what the world will become," said John. Other key points of business were the confirmation of the Board size at 14 members, the re-election of five Directors, and a review of the Society's financials - which are in a healthy state.

The school's annual report contains more details on the 2017-18 school year. It will be mailed to all Society members next week and is also available online. This past week, Yale University welcomed more than 2,100 students from 58 countries for The World Scholar's Cup Tournament of Champions. Among them were Mulgrave students: Harry C, Sophie Y, Kaden G, Markus M, Terrence Z, Amin G, Mona X, Leona L, Kiki, K, Victoria L, Helen L, Angelina Y, Vivian Y, and Alyssa U. Students engaged with a set curriculum under the theme of 'An Entangled World'. They also enjoyed a Yale University gallery tour, and lectures from notable poet Rita Mae Reese and Yale University Law professor Sue Biniaz.
Mulgrave will host a World Scholar's Cup Regional round in May 2019. The 2019 Global Rounds will be held in Beijing, Manila, Astana, Durban, The Hague and Sydney. More information will be available in the Winter Co-curricular Guide and on the World Scholar's Cup Website. By Shanaz Ramji, VP Junior School, Director of Learning and Teaching; Kathryn Clark, VP Senior School and DP Coordinator; and Michael Moore, Director of 21st Century Skills Development and Data Manager Mombasa, Kenya, is an 11 hour time difference from Vancouver, and is about as far as you can get from Vancouver! We travelled there over the November Break to work with, and learn from, teacher trainees and faculty at the Aga Khan Academy (AKA).
The AKA in Mombasa is part of the the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). This was Mulgrave's second visit to the Academy, as part of the partnership developed between our two schools in 2017. The AKDN has been supporting education initiatives in the developing world for over a century. As part of their commitment to developing novice teachers from local communities, the Academies runs an intensive Teacher Preparation Programme (TPP) for 18 months.
The Mulgrave team was fortunate to support the TPP in the areas of mentorship, differentiation, and assessment, and coach the mentors of each intern. We have three upcoming opportunities for Mulgrave parents to learn about and discuss some very relevant topics. More details and online registration are available on our website.

Did you know that baking is a fantastic math and measures activity to do with your Early Years and Junior School children? In fact, in late October some Grade 4 students embarked on a home learning activity that had the flour flying, mixers spinning and numbers crunching. Gabriella C. noted a few learnings from her cookie-making experience: "I was wondering how Fahrenheit compares to Celsius. I did learn that 1 C is the same as 33.8 F. I started to ask myself about the percentage of every ingredient in a cookie...The total cups of ingredients was 4.8333 cups. The percentage is calculated by dividing an ingredient by the total. For example, the cookies contain 1 cup of sugar. 1 cup divided by 4.833 = 20.69%." The Linda Hamer Theatre at Mulgrave will host a number of fantastic events over the coming week. Be sure to come and enjoy the theatre, film and musical works of our students. November 24th, 6:30pm: ZOOM Film Festival Awards Night It's that time of year again!
