DEEP DIALOGUE

"I was no longer Violet, I was known as number 78."

We were honoured to have special guests Violet March, residential school survivor, and Bee Schadeck, Aboriginal awareness educator, speak with students and faculty this past Wednesday. Following a screening of the film Indian Horse for Grade 8-12 students, Violet brought the storyline even more to

life, sharing some of her own childhood experiences of 11 years in a residential school in Alberta.

She spoke of the loneliness, confusion and pain of being taken from her family and traditional lands at the age of five, and how the ensuing years of trauma still impact her life today, as well as those of her children and grandchildren. Violet's two granddaughters joined her, this being the first time that they have heard their grandmother publicly speak about her experiences. The stories stirred up both emotions and questions, which were discussed in classrooms and even more in depth during a lunchtime session with the Senior Service Action Council and Changemaker Club.

BROADENING HORIZONS

Over the summer, Richard Kristen, Middle School Visual Arts Teacher, made his way down under to study Aboriginal art.

Recipient of the annual Tony Allard Professional Development Bursary, Richard had catalogued hundreds of pieces of traditional and contemporary art and had a myriad of experiences that included a painting workshop, a rainforest walk with Aboriginal guide and learning how paint pigments are derived from creek bed clays - all of which will enrich and inform his teaching.

"It was a great privilege and honour to be awarded the Tony Allard Bursary for teacher professional development," says Richard. "I used this opportunity to broaden my knowledge of Australian Aboriginal art, make connections with BC First Nations art and other contemporary art and tie it into the art curriculum and studio learning."

THE SWEET SOUNDS OF LEARNING

Highly-acclaimed music educator and author, Doug Goodkin, is a bit of a guru amongst performing arts teachers.

We were very fortunate to have Doug work with our teachers and Junior School students for two days earlier this week. Click on the image above to watch a short highlight video...wait for the little Halloween fright at the end!

DEMOCRACY AT WORK
Image

Last week, we shared a few photos and some info on the Student Votes initiative. This week, Grade 10 students Emmalyn T and Tianna L dive deeper into their journey to becoming informed voters. Putting in a great deal of effort into understanding the issues and candidates' positions, they share the significant process they used to research and educate their peers before casting their ballots.

"We had the special privilege of conducting phone interviews with most of the candidates, having an in-depth discussion regarding each candidates' beliefs, which helped us further understand what they would do for our municipal government. Our team diligently researched to create a background information sheet about current issues in Vancouver, and policies that may be enacted to combat these issues."

Get ready for winter

All of the glorious weather we've had has been such a treat, and may lull us into believing winter may not arrive any time soon. But, we all know better!

Now's a good time to check the state of your winter tires and if needed, order new ones before the rush. The road to school is particularly treacherous, even with just a little dusting of snow (which we can get even when there is just rain in other parts of the city), so we strongly recommend winter tires versus all seasons.
