DR. TABET GOES ON TOUR

Last week, Dr. Chiara Tabet, Senior School Principal, and Joyce Tang from our university counselling team, toured a number of universities in the United States. Visiting campuses such as Harvard, MIT, Swathmore, UPenn and Rutgers, they had the opportunity to meet with admissions representatives and dive into broad-based educational concepts, as well as the specifics of a Mulgrave education.

In an account of her time on the campuses, Dr. Tabet reflects on the myriad of interesting discussions she had about students' personal growth, the future of education, the ethical duties of educational institutions and the importance of student exploration of different ways of approaching practical and intellectual problems.

"This idea that, in order to grow both as individuals and as experts in their own areas, students should be exposed to a variety of perspectives and disciplines, was very much the common theme of the visits, and also enthusiastically endorsed by Princeton (a wonderful campus not far from New York), Rutgers (a great school for student athletes!) and Columbia University. The thinking is that early and consistent exposure to cross-pollination between different academic areas allows us to develop higher problem solving skills because it gives us access to a multitude of different intellectual tools and ultimately informs our ability to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of possible solutions. Thinking out of the box, it seems, results from our ability to think in multiple 'boxes' at the same time, and to use the best tool from each when solving problems."

WHO DOES WHAT? THE ROLE OF THE BOARD

Harry Wierenga (second from the left) tours the West Wing construction site with other Board members.

The Mulgrave Independent School Society is a not-for-profit organisation, and as such, is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. This 14-person body partners with the Head of School to set and oversee the strategic direction and financial well-being of the school.

Easy to say, perhaps, but what does it actually mean?

Harry Wierenga, Board Chair, explains: "The Board is looking at Mulgrave's long-term direction and considering the decisions that need to be made to set us up for success not only today, but also 5, 10, and 20 plus years down the

road. We do that using a committee structure so we can hone in on the most important matters."

Committees include Finance, Building and Grounds, Nominations, Audit, and Governance. Non-Board members also serve on committees. The work of the committees (on which non-Board members also serve) sets the groundwork for Board decisions on matters such as the evaluation of the Head of School, fee structures, policy revisions and development, and the overall annual budget. The Board also assesses and manages risks that the school may face.

BOLD TO GO BALD - A STUDENT'S INITIATIVE

Image

My name is Tessa Rinck. I am a Grade 10 student and this is my personal project!

On November 20th, I will be hosting an event that is very dear to my heart. I will be going bald (once again) during a head shaving event that will take place during an extended lunch session at Mulgrave from 1:00-2:30pm.

The purpose of this event is to raise awareness, along with funds, for children's cancer research and more specifically to support the BC Children's Hospital Foundation. Anyone can (and should) sign up to participate in the event by either shaving their head and/or cutting off at least eight inches of their hair, which can be used to make a wig for children losing their hair because of cancer treatment.

In addition to the all of the participants who are extremely 'Bold to go Bald', there will plenty of great food and drink, as well as some live music and other surprises to brighten up the day. There is even a strong chance that the event will be broadcast by Global BC1.

SHARE YOUR MULGRAVE INSIGHTS

Our Kids is an online platform and set of publications that collects and presents comprehensive information on private education, camps and other programmes. You may have seen their recent insert in the Globe and Mail.

Mulgrave has actively participated in a number of Our Kids channels over the years as we find their audience to be well-aligned with families seeking out a school like ours.

As a new initiative, Our Kids is inviting alumni, parents and students to review member schools. The reviews will be showcased on their website, but this is not a process to be taken lightly.

Our Kids requires reviewers to complete a 10-part questionnaire, which results in a 1,000-plus word review. Knowing that this is a significant time commitment, Our Kids will pay $50 per successfully completed review. In addition, you will have our gratitude - your insider views and perspectives are so valuable to us and to those that are researching Mulgrave for their children.

ATHLETICS ROUND-UP
Image

It was a busy week on the Athletics front - from cross country for G3 and up, to the annual West Van Derby with Collingwood, and the announcement of Upper School Athletes of the Month for September, there was no shortage of activity.

As a highlight of the week, it was a beautiful day on Thursday for the big West Van Derby. The G6/7 and Varsity boys soccer teams took on rivals from Collingwood. With a couple of quick goals in the first half, and a third later on, the G6/7

team held off Collingwood and ended victorious, with a score of 3-0. The Varsity Boys fought hard, but despite a goal in the second half, they were unable to make a comeback. The Derby record remains all square at two wins per team...until next year...
