Ms. Wrigley toured the school under the guidance of students, engaged with small groups to discuss their project work and offered a keynote address at an Upper School assembly.
Her message was clear - it's up to each of us to find our passions and work together to make a difference in our world. "Remember to keep your head up and your heart open to serving the needs of our people and our planet," she commented during the assembly. "Seek out the collaborators who will help you to put the pieces together and connect the dots to address the challenges our society will face."
As we head into Thanksgiving weekend, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all that makes us thankful. Please click on the image above for a few insights from our students and staff. We often hear from parents as well that they are so grateful for the support and camaraderie that they find within the Mulgrave community.
Thanks to this group of PK4 Dads for sharing the joy of new-found friends and their fishing adventures! We wish all of you a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend. Next Friday (October 12th from 6:00-9:00pm), bring the whole family to Mulgrave for a great community event. Hosted by our Mulgrave Volunteer Parent Association, the annual Family Bingo Night always offers loads of laughs and a vibrant setting for children and parents alike.
Navida S, parent and event veteran, says "Our family looks forward to Bingo Night every year! It's a super-high energy event, lots of fun for the kids, and a great chance for parents to connect with each other. And who doesn't love a sticky, sweet sundae bar?!"
Be sure to get your tickets soon - this event has been a sell-out in the past. A new school year often brings about a lot of change, and this one was no exception. As we work to become more efficient and effective, particularly in our operational responsibilities, we've embarked on some new partnerships. Now, more than a month in, we're happy to report on the resulting progress.
Mark Steffens (left) and Kelly Chow (right) don't only share style sensibilities, but also goals to make Mulgrave systems as efficient and effective as possible. Over the summer, our Senior School students kept busy with a wide variety of enriching activities including jobs, internships, volunteer activities, travel, academic pursuits, competitions of many sorts, and more. This week, we profile Yuheng W, a dedicated scientist on the leading edge. Yuheng W (G12), broke new Mulgrave ground this summer as the first of our students to participate in the ICFO Youth and Science two-week summer intensive programme in Barcelona. As described on their website, "ICFO is a young research institution that aims to advance the very limits of knowledge in Photonics, namely the science and technology of harnessing Light." Their summer internships offer select secondary students the opportunity to engage in leading-edge research projects.
We're quickly approaching our November Break. Introduced a few years ago, this school holiday has had a direct correlation to reduced student illness and absences over the winter months. But as much as a slower pace is a good thing, we know there are many families that are looking for engaging and fun activities in the days following Remembrance Day. Cue Mulgrave's November Camps...
Two camps stream are available this year - a mixed-discipline programme for students in K-G6, and a Chinese language and culture immersion programme for G6-12 Mandarin B students. More information and registration is available on our website. In last week's issue of Connexions, we shared student activities to acknowledge and learn about Orange Shirt Day.
To continue the conversation about the impact of residential schools in Canada, Grade 9-12 classes will screen the film Indian Horse and engage in discussions with some special guests.
Parents are very welcome to join on October 24th from 8:45-10:45am in the Theatre. In a fast-paced world with technology at every turn, it can be tough to truly unplug.
Mulgrave's newest Outdoor Ed initiative, "Get Out", promotes just that. No need to join a club or make an ongoing commitment - Upper School students can sign up for individual trips to the great outdoors.
The first excursion is an overnight backpacking trip to Lindeman Lake on October 26-27th. Click here to find out more. The bus routes for this school year have been finalised. But, it's not too late to still register for a stop in your neighbourhood. Students (Grade 3 and up) can also hop on as needed with single ride tickets.
Please see our Transportation website for detailed route info. Next Thursday, October 11th, Mulgrave is hosting the second annual West Van Derby, a doubleheader soccer match between the Mulgrave Titans and Collingwood Cavaliers.
The term "derby" originates from England as far back as 1840, and is used to describe a sporting fixture between two rival teams in close proximity to each other - particularly soccer teams of the same town, city or region. Last year we split with Collingwood (each team won one game of the doubleheader). This year, the G6/7s will kickoff at 2:00pm, with the Varsity team playing right after at 4:00pm. We hope that everyone (students, parents, staff, alumni, friends...) is able to come out and fill the stands overlooking the field! ©2018 Mulgrave School |
