24TH ANNUAL TERRY FOX RUN

The clouds parted and the sun came out to greet our Junior School students this morning as they took off at our 24th annual Terry Fox Run. Early Years students took to the field a few hours later, and managed to dodge the raindrops. Showing great spirit, students, faculty and many parents completed lap after lap. A big thank you to all of the volunteers that manned the water station and handed out much-coveted popsicle sticks.

Before the run, Junior School students heard from Anna Solnickova, who shared her incredibly inspiring tale of perseverance. Anna fought the same type of cancer that plagued Terry Fox and turned to his story continually for strength throughout her own battle. We were honoured to have her participate in our assembly and cheer on students as they ran.

MVP WELCOMES PARENTS AT ANNUAL COFFEE MORNING

We had a full house at the first Mulgrave Volunteer Parent Association Coffee of the new school year. Held on Wednesday morning, the event offered parents - both new and returning - the opportunity to connect with one another and learn more about the work of the MVP.

MVP President, Shannon Vrsnik welcomed parents and introduced members of the Executive who outlined a myriad of volunteer opportunities.

From the Bingo Night to the Library, there are opportunities for everyone - whether you have a few hours to spare or are able to commit to a more sustained volunteer role. To indicate interest, click here and complete the MVP Volunteer Form.

LIVING IN A DIGITAL WORLD
You don't have to look far these days to find examples of artificial intelligence - auto-pilot and vacuuming robots are the norm. Our Middle School students grappled with the topic, and what it means for humanity, during Digital Literacy Week. Held over the first few days of school, the bootcamp atmosphere engaged students in discourse about managing technology, responsible use and creating a positive online presence.

Kameel A (G8), is passionate about technology but also understands the pitfalls and challenges. "It was interesting to hear Mr. Dallman talk about AI," says Kameel. "We talked about some scenarios where AI would have to make a decision, for example, if you're in a self-driving car and the brakes fail, putting the driver and others at risk. Does the car drive off a cliff, or hit another car and possibly hurt people? Really, you're relying on the programmer to be ethical."

Junior School students are also covering online safety and citizenship over the coming weeks.

PEOPLE OF MULGRAVE: OUR STUDENT BOARD CO-CHAIRS

Last year, our Senior School Prefects undertook a highly consultative process to gather input about student leadership at Mulgrave. They engaged MVP groups throughout the school as well as the Senior School leadership team and students from Grades 10-12. Based on their findings, the group made a proposal to implement changes that are geared towards a more collaborative and distributed leadership model.

We're please to introduce our new Student Board - 10 Grade 12 students who have elected by their Senior School Peers and teachers: Ali M, Andrew H, Anna E, Celina M, Ethan L, Henry S, Ingrid W, Irene Z, Liliana B and Sam Y. Get to know Co-Chairs Ethan and Ingrid, and learn more about the Student Board, in this People of Mulgrave video.

TEDx YOUTH IN OUR MIDST

On September 22nd, two Mulgrave students will share their inspiring stories at the TEDxYouth@WestVancouver event.

Benjamin D (G7) has successfully worked to change the by-laws for chicken ownership in the District of North Vancouver. Now, he's turning his sights to encouraging others to participate in local government. And that chicken coop? He's almost finished building it.

Carrie Z (G12) is involved in everything from mental health advocacy to K-pop dance. She'll share her experience creating and donating an art piece to the North Shore Hospice.

Let's get out and support these young leaders. Tickets are available online.

CHINA LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

Grade 6-9 Mandarin B students have the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Shanghai exchange during the early months of 2019. The trip focusses on language study and cultural activities.

The Parent Information Session is on September 20th and the application deadline follows. If you are interested in learning more, please see the Student Life website on the Parent Portal.
