April 20, 2018

This week is National Volunteer Week and our first few posts will showcase the amazing altruism of our parents and students. Thank you for your incredible commitment to our school and community!

MULGRAVE'S VOLUNTEER PARENTS

Our MVP dedicates their time, resources, and energy to enhance our vibrant sense of community, and we are deeply grateful. We asked a few of our MVP to share what they enjoy about volunteering at Mulgrave:

"It's a great way to be involved with our community, and I love seeing families connect during our events." - Nikki Tilley

"I enjoy being in a position to learn by doing and helping toward the mission and vision of the school." - Chia Chen

"I get to collaborate with like-minded people, contribute to the school in my small way, and have a great time doing it!" - Eve Chang

"Meeting so many interesting parents who bring diverse cultural and professional experiences makes working together very enriching."
- Brenda Rajani

"I love how we help build a community that has a positive voice and supports each other. Also, I am convinced that the best way to teach our children is to show them how and what to do. By being an active member of the MVP and the Mulgrave community, I am modelling to my child what engagement, commitment, participation, teamwork, and community looks like and how every action we take locally has a positive and lasting impact." - Ira Vergani

"Meeting other parents from across the divisions." - Ellen D'Atri

"Being a part of a team that helps Mulgrave thrive by coordinating MVP events that unite our community."

Speaking of MVP events...have you bought your tickets to Gala?

TOP 5 REASONS TO GO TO GALA

5. The theme. Most of us have seen Grease, and whether you love or hate the movie, you have to admit, they looked like they were having a great time!

4.The activities. Roll the dice at the casino, take part in punch-a-hole, bid on auction items, or donate to our wishlist. So many options!

3. The food. Have you seen the menu?! Your taste buds will thank you.

2.The clothes. Can you really miss the chance to see John Wray dressed up as a greaser?

1.The people. Fellow parents, teachers, and principals will all be there to enjoy an amazing evening with you.

What are you waiting for? Ticket sales close in just over a week, so don't miss out!

OUTSTANDING STUDENT INITIATIVES

The Green Prefects and SSAC will be holding an electronics drive as part of this year's Spring Drive. Please bring in old electronic items including smartphones, laptops, chargers, music players (i.e. iPods), portable CD players, and cameras. Due to size limitations, refrain from bringing in heavy items, such as TVs, desktop computers, or printers. Collection bins will be in the main lobby and JS lobby.

Backpack Buddies

Backpack Buddies is a unique programme that provides food for kids over the weekends. Grade 11 students, Anna E and Sayeed M, have rallied support for this initiative, and as a school, we have been providing 25 to 30 bags of food every week to another school in East Vancouver. Anna shares, "I think this programme has a special spark because the Mulgrave community comes together to make a huge impact on one of the poorest schools in the district, leaving the students with huge smiles – we saw this when we dropped off bags at Admiral Seymour Elementary last June. I hope to grow and expand this initiative next year, and hopefully have the students at Mulgrave go and drop off the food bags to the other students."

Grads Give Back

As graduation fast approaches, our grads thought it would be a great idea to start an Alumni Fund that would be available to fund scholarships for future generations of students who may need a helping hand. Our Grade12s are asking their entire graduating class

to make a donation of $25 in honour of Mulgrave's upcoming 25th anniversary. These students will be the first-ever donors to the Alumni Fund and are hoping for 100% participation from their class.

ATHLETICS NEWS: BC WINTER GAMES

On February 23rd-25th, three Mulgrave students participated in the BC Winter Games in Kamloops. Charlotte (G11) was a member of the North Shore Netball team that finished 4th in the province. Charlotte played the position of centre, and has since been asked to train with the U23 BC Provincial Team and the U21 Canadian National Team!

Milan (G7) and Cate (G7) both ski for the Whistler Mountain Ski Club in the U14 division. While competing at Sun Peaks this past February, they both took part in the Slalom and Giant Slalom races, with Milan finishing as high as 12th in one of the GS races. Building off their success in Kamloops, both Milan and Cate went on to ski at the U14 Provincial Championships in Fernie March 23rd-25th.

MULGRAVE HOSTS WORLD SCHOLAR'S CUP

On April 14th and 15th, Mulgrave hosted the third annual Vancouver Round of the World Scholar's Cup. The school was buzzing with excitement as the nearly 200 'scholars' engaged in Collaborative Writing, Team Debate, Scholar's Challenge, and the Scholar's Bowl. Mulgrave teams fared extremely well, particularly our seniors, and all of our teams qualified for the Global Round taking place in the summer. The complete results can be found here. Congratulations to all our participants!

MULGRAVE GOES ABROAD: PART DEUX

Over Spring Break, 17 Grade 10-11 students from Mulgrave joined 18 students from Meadowridge to travel to France. After a couple of jet-lagged days in Paris – during which they visited Notre Dame, the Latin Quarter, and the Eiffel Tower, had a river cruise down the Seine, enjoyed crêpes and delicious pastries, shopped at the Galleries Lafayette, and admired Impressionist art at the Musée d'Orsay – they travelled by high-speed train south to Montpellier, which was their home for two weeks... UNIVERSITY COUNSELLING SPOTLIGHT SERIES: CAREER EXPLORATION

In the second part of our University Counselling series, we highlight the career counselling support Mulgrave provides. We believe that self-awareness and research are essential to informing a student's process in course selection, career exploration, and university planning. Our counsellors have researched and selected the following resources as the best, most intuitive, accessible, and accurate options available to students that will assist them in identifying their personality traits, learning preferences, aptitudes and interests.

GLOBAL LUNCH NEXT WEEK

Volunteer parents representing our diverse community will come together to prepare a globally-inspired feast for G7-12 students. Dishes will be cooked/baked at home or arranged through favourite restaurants in order to showcase many of our school's cultures' most popular dishes.
