February 23, 2018 Lunar New Year Celebration: Saturday, February 24th, 2:30-5:30pm Our Town (MS Production): Monday, February 26th, 6:00pm Academics, arts, athletics, and so much more! Students entering Grades 1 to 12 are going to love our summer programmes. This year, we've partnered with Nike, the Whitecaps, Zen Maker Lab, and the Red Cross to offer you the very best in summer learning, skill building, and fun. We also have Math and English boosts, language classes, and courses to help prepare for the DP. With many Mulgrave teachers guiding our programmes, it's sure to be an enriching experience for all. Huge congratulations to Grade 12 student, Armon S! He was recently recognised as a Loran Scholar and will receive the Loran Award valued at $100,000. He was selected out of more than 5,000 applicants across Canada. What gave him a competitive advantage? What was the application process like? How did he find out? We sat down with Armon to find out answers to these questions and more. Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself, but her grand plans for the big city go completely awry! The play promises to be a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment. In Millie Dillmount, musical theatre has found a heroine for the ages.
At Mulgrave, we are proud to have an eclectic and dynamic artistic community, rich in cultural heritage, and unique in their own talents and abilities. We all have a story to tell and the medium we choose ultimately becomes the impression we leave on our community.
Date: Monday, March 12th Time: 6:00-8:00pm Join us for a celebration of culture, marking the start of the New Year and the first day of spring. Even if this is not a holiday that your family celebrates, we encourage you to attend. As with all Norouz celebrations, we will be enjoying authentic food to tantalise your taste buds and fun entrainment, including music, dancing, interactive booths, and activities for both kids and adults.
Pink Day is Mulgrave's annual Upper School version of the province-wide Anti-Bullying Pink Shirt Day. On Wed, Feb 28th, all students and staff are encouraged to wear 'pink civvies' to stand up to bullying by not being bystanders! This is a very apt focus for the day as Pink Shirt Day originated when students in a high school stood up for a young boy who was being bullied for wearing a pink T-shirt. The cost to participate is $2. All funds support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Canada and the Red Cross Respect-Ed Violence Prevention Program. Back by popular demand, it's time to order your Spirit Week Lunch from Tacofino and Booster Juice. $15 for 2 of the best west coast inspired tacos in Vancouver and $5 for a premium smoothie from Booster Juice. 100% of profits go to support the amazing work of The White Helmets. Place your order today! Having recently completed their Nuclear and Particle Physics unit, Grade 12 Physics students visited the nuclear accelerator at TRIUMF, UBC. On the tour, they visited the cyclotron and PET scanner, saw applications of nuclear medicine to treat retinal cancer, and were introduced to experiments on how the universe works and what happens if time is reversed. The tour reinforced course content, and the guide who showed the students the facility emailed later to say that the group was, "by far, the most well-informed school group I've ever led...and your students' general knowledge of physics and other sciences is impressive as well." The students remarked how helpful it was to hear the guide link the theory learnt throughout the course - mechanics, fields, circular motion, radioactivity - to the experiments and applications at TRIUMF. Some appreciated seeing the relevance of what is studied and being exposed to real-life applications. Interest was piqued by the comment that many discoveries are made with no idea of where they may be applied, and that only years later someone other than the original scientist finds a use. Seeing the big machines and engineering bits was the highlight for our mechanically-minded students. Perhaps the most intriguing experiment was the 'time machine', an experiment to investigate what laws of physics are applied when time is reversed. Jenna has always loved animals. At six, she asked friends to donate to the SPCA rather than give gifts, a tradition she continues to this day. She donates her allowance and she bakes and sells cupcakes to raise funds for the SPCA. Her ongoing generosity did not go unnoticed. Last year, her mom received a call asking if Jenna and her family wanted Canucks tickets and if they were interested in meeting a player. The answer was "Yes!" Last weekend, a team of students in Grades 7-10 travelled to SFU to participate in a Math Challengers competition. Math Challengers is an enrichment programme that promotes strategic problem-solving by exposing students to complex problems that require creativity and persistence in order to be solved – critical skills needed in an increasingly technological society. Our students competed individually and as teams based on their grade. Their effort was exceptional, and we're impressed with the performance of every participant. Of special note:
We expect that both the Grade 7 and 10 teams will qualify for provincials in April, but we won't know officially until all the results from around the province are finalised. Go math! Junior School Our four Jr. School basketball teams (G5 Girls and Boys and G6 Girls and Boys) closed their seasons last week with Play Days. Congratulations to all players for their successful seasons. Special kudos to our G5 girls who swept their opposition, scoring victories in all 10 games against 10 different schools. In addition, the Mulgrave swim team stroked their way to a third place finish in the ISEA Swimming Championship. Excellent job, swimmers! Upper School Last weekend, both the G8 Boys and Girls Basketball teams had their ISAA Championships. After a strong performance on Friday, the girls were able to win and compete for the final on Saturday. The boys had their most complete game of the season and also made it to the the final on Saturday. While both teams were unable to win in the championship games, it was awesome for them to watch and support each other and they certainly put Mulgrave on the map as one of the top independent schools for basketball in the Lower Mainland!
In September, we featured the wonderful fundraising efforts of Grade 6 student, Sophie S. She is a dedicated supporter for PALS Autism School and recently, she visited the school to drop off her cheque from the money she raised making and selling slime. The director of the school gave Sophie a tour and the kids greeted her and gave her a card they had made. In an email to Ms. Mitchell, Sophie's mom shared, "It was a really bittersweet visit, Sophie was so brave and sweet, but it was emotional. Mulgrave is instilling a great sense of leadership in these kids, hopefully they will do even greater things as they get older. I asked Sophie if she was uncomfortable at anytime, she said, 'No, they live this everyday; I can handle being uncomfortable for an hour.'" We are humbled and very proud of you, Sophie. ©2018 Mulgrave School |
