PROVINCIAL PUBLIC SPEAKING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two weeks ago, Mulgrave hosted the DSABC Provincial Public Speaking Championships. We had six of our own students, ranging from Grade 7 to 11, competing as individuals. In total, we hosted 64 students and 60 volunteers over the weekend to great success.

The tournament highlights several types of public speaking categories, including impromptu debating, interpretive reading, persuasive speaking, impromptu speaking, and dramatic monologue. Our young Mulgravian speakers demonstrated their confidence and intellect by pushing themselves to try out some of these categories for the first time in a tournament setting.

Read more about the this event and hear from a few students who participated.

STUDENTS PITCH 'BRIGHT IDEA' IN DRAGON'S DEN-STYLE COMPETITION

Bright Ideas is an entrepreneurship  programme for high school students hosted by Enactus SFU. For six weeks, participants learn fundamental business skills, including marketing, finance, and HR. As a final project, school teams are loaned $100 to start up their own business with the support of 1-2 mentor(s). To complete the programme, teams pitch their idea to business professionals. Bright Ideas allows students to explore the business world and develop their collaboration and interpersonal skills.

On December 3rd, Mulgrave students participating in the programme pitched their idea:

"Our social entrepreneurial business, Bio Beads, is composed of five driven Grade 11 students: Ethan, Anna, Michael, Laelia, and Ken. Our mission is to spread awareness, educate younger generations, and take action to reduce the growing problem of ocean pollution. We remove harmful pollutants from local

Vancouver beaches through facilitating beach cleanups and recycling the plastic into fashionable and chic bracelets. Once we sell the bracelets, the proceeds go to awareness for marine environmental pollution." - Anna E.
