On Wednesday, October 27th the Grade 9 Visual Art class was taken on a field trip with Mr. Kristen to the Urban Source in Downtown to collect materials for our next art project. Urban Source has been Vancouver's number one choice for alternative art materials for a very long time. In the project, we will be creating an assemblage or a collage from the items that we pick at the Urban Source. The theme is someone's trash may be someone else's treasure. In addition, we visited Marcus Bowcott's Trans Am Totem in False Creek and Gisele Amantea's Memento. They were both very unique retro futuristic pieces of art. Memento comprises a permanent public sculpture and a suite of temporary artworks that have been conceived to reflect both the historic and the currently evolving material culture of Main Street in Vancouver, BC. The Trans Am Totem is a 10 meter high sculpture composed of five real scrap cars stacked upon an old growth cedar tree. The artwork follows the "out with the old, in with the new" theme. In conclusion, the art field trip has been a very unique and fun experience for me to pick out the materials that I will be using for my next project as well as having the opportunity to appreciate the retro futuristic art that infamous talented artist have made for our country.
