We're extremely proud of Hannah Rahim (Class of 2016) who was featured this week on UToday for being the recipient of the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship for the 2016-17 year. With our current grads having completed their Extended Essays this week, we wanted to catch up with Hannah to see how she is doing at the University of Calgary, and how the IB and the EE prepared her for the workload after graduation. Keep reading to see what Hannah had to share.

I have been at the University of Calgary for almost a month and am enjoying my time here so far. I have met many amazing people and had a lot of interesting and fun experiences. IB has definitely helped my transition to university through developing skills like time management, as I have found so far that the workload is much less than what we were used to during DP, which has allowed me to get more involved with the campus community. I have started volunteering with a tutoring program for disabled youth, the centre for sexual and gender diversity on campus and some social advocacy-related clubs. The service opportunities offered at Mulgrave have helped me develop relatable skills to the initiatives at the U of C.

Critical thinking skills that we learned in ToK have been applicable to my medical science inquiry course, where we were discussing the validity of science, as we did in ToK. As the grade 12s handed in their EEs this week, I'd like to mention that conducting my bio EE was great preparation for university labs – I actually just finished a lab that used a spectrophotometer to measure reaction rate, which was what I did in my EE. I hope everything is going well at Mulgrave, and best of luck to the class of 2017!
