Dr. Marianne McTavish
Dr. Marianne McTavish is currently Associate Dean of Teacher Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. She is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Language and Literacy Education and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in education at UBC since 1990; her contributions have been recognized with the Murray Elliott Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Teacher Education Program and the Critical Perspectives on Early Childhood Education Emerging Scholar Award of the American Educational Research Association.
Her time at UBC intersected with a 31-year teaching career in Surrey and West Vancouver. She has worked closely with the Ministry of Education in developing curriculum and assessment materials and has served with the BC Teachers Federation as a Provincial Specialist Association Vice-President.
Her research work with early childhood teacher candidates and digital literacies reconceptualises the way literacy is taught and practiced. She has authored several professional resources in addition to scholarly articles and chapters on young children’s emergent literacy learning, teacher education, and family literacy.
