Helaine and her husband, Curt, have been active members of Mulgrave for eighteen years. Their youngest daughter graduated from Mulgrave in 2012. Helaine has a professional designation in Education from Simon Fraser University. In addition to classroom teaching, she was responsible for the administration of individual standardized achievement tests assessing all levels from K-G7. Helaine served on numerous district committees and was an active member of the CEC: Canadian Council for Exceptional Children.
A passionate advocate for education, health and the arts, Helaine has been involved in a variety of not-for-profit organisations, community services and programmes including the Foundation Board for the BC Centre for Ability [formerly BC Neurological Centre] where she served as past president; and the Foundation Board of Inspire Health [Integrated Cancer Care Centre], where she served as past Board director. Helaine’s work expands to include close to two decades of service at Endeavour [benefiting the Arts, Sciences, and Health] where she also held a director position with the Board. Helaine was involved for over a decade on the executive of Arts Umbrella [the Dance Company], a non-profit organisation committed to delivering the highest quality visual and performing arts education to children and youth.
