NEWS: Arts Week
Arts Week was a resounding success! Noon hours activities like the dress up photo booth, pizza decorating, and dance revolution contest kept us really busy and in a creative spirit. The Tuesday assembly was highlighted by the “Fashion Creation” modeling challenge where students from Grades 7 – 12 created an outfit out of recycled materials and dressed a model to “strutt their stuff” in a highly entertaining fashion show.
The feature of the week was the Wednesday evening concert entitled “Living Art”. This concert showcased the talent, the exuberance, and the creativity of our students. The Grade 10 Theatre production, (Ms. Hughes McGuinness) based on the play “The Number 14,” was written and performed by the students. This insightful, poignant and humorous play documented the observations of people

who frequented a park bench. The bands, under the direction of Ms Morris, looked and sounded professional with their wonderful pieces and spectacular solos. It was evident that they were enjoying themselves as members of such a talented group of musicians. Ms Creber’s choral Ensemble B sang a brilliant piece entitled “Love Heals” from the musical Rent. The Film department under the leadership of Ms Anson showcased many of their films from the year. Two of the films shown were winners at the recent BC student Film Festival.
Virtually every student in Visual Arts (Ms. Sheh, Ms Wozny) showed a piece of their art work during the week. Guests attending the show opening on Wednesday evening were astounded at how artistic the work looked and how unique all of the pieces were. “The work is clever, it looks like Art rather than assignments, the middle school art work looks like fun, and it is amazing how many artists we have at Mulgrave School” were some of the comments offered by those at the gallery opening. Several pieces are going on display next week at the Ferry Building Gallery for the annual West Vancouver Grad Show of select Grade 12 students from West Vancouver.
Other performances enjoyed much success this week as well; from the Grade 8 Theatre class performing scenes from Romeo and Juliet (while the Grade 8 Art students sketched them); the Grade 9s did social studies anthologies for selected junior school classes; and the final performance on Thursday was a student directed piece entitled “Cameras” by the Grade 11 IB class. The spirit and enthusiasm of the week was encompassed in all performers and audience members.
Many thanks from the Mulgrave Fine Arts Department and Arts Council for a wonderful week filled with a love and respect for the Arts.
