CURRICULUM: Technology
Mulgrave is a school dedicated to remaining at the forefront of IT development globally. Our students will be living the rest of their lives in a digital and cyberspace environment. The faster they come up to speed, the more they will direct and control continual change rather than being swamped by it. The immediate requirements of each student are met through different programmes in the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools.
Computers throughout the school are networked to a school intranet that contains material selected and reviewed by teachers and can be accessed by our students as their teachers direct. They have access to full electronic connectivity. Students file and retrieve material from any convenient location on the net or the LAN. They send material for assessment and review via email. More traditional technology such as video, radio, and tape is available to them as well, while our theater offers full lighting, sound and display facilities.
The Junior School
The ICT programme in the Junior School supports the depth of inquiry learning provided by the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate by utilising the latest in educational software combined with the latest in educational thinking and research. By integrating authentic classroom inquiry with the creative and purposeful use of new technologies, our students’ learning is enhanced allowing new ways of expressing and communicating their learning to become available. Higher-order thinking skills are fostered by the open-ended nature of ICT tools.
The Middle School
The emphasis at this level is on equipping the students with familiarity in standard applications that they are then able to use in their class work. To this end faculty in all Departments make regular use of the computer lab facilities to engage and instruct the students. Students have access to a wide range of information-rich, age-appropriate resources, hardware, and software to explore their academic inquiries in the broadest possible ways.
The Senior School
The emphasis in the Senior School shifts to exam preparation and students use the skills they have acquired to assist in this. The school servers and library Internet are available to students for research and students are still able to use their Tablet Computers for this purpose. The university or workplace ICT skills, which we expect each student to use at this level, are:
- Word processing
- Excel spreadsheets
- Access database
- Advanced Word i.e. appendix, automatic indexing, macros
- Internet and information search skills i.e. Boolean logic
- Email and Internet familiarity
- Library catalogue search skills
- General skills in network logons and administration
Tablet PC Programme
Designed to develop computer mastery in pupils in the Senior School, this programme involves each pupil having their own computer. The software on the computer is owned by the school. This software, covering office and graphic packages, is upgradeable annually to the latest versions as long as the pupil remains at Mulgrave School. Students use their Tablets in special instructional sessions to develop skills and in the general curriculum to improve their learning efficiency.
Currently the school arranges the supply of laptop computers from HP and each year a decision is made on the model and specifications to be supplied. We do not allow the use of third-party machines because of the extra cost involved for the school in non-standard configurations.
Included in the price is an extended three-year warranty and insurance cover. Our ICT Support Staff attend to minor repairs, or machines are sent off-site for more detailed service.
Each year we hold our "Out of The Box" computer information evening in September to explain the programme to parents and students entering Grade 10.

Mulgrave Technology Mission
Mulgrave School will provide students and teachers with the technology to develop the confidence and lifelong learning skills necessary to be productive citizens in an information-driven, global society.
Students will leverage technology to construct knowledge and meaning by engaging in personally relevant and meaningful learning experiences. Teachers and administrators, leveraging technology, will become more efficient and effective in facilitating and managing the learning environment.
Technology contributes to this educational vision by creating learning environments and providing opportunities…
- That involve collaboration, communication and problem-solving - connecting students to the outside world.
- That allow students to explore areas of interest, make decisions about paths of inquiry, and become responsible, independent learners.
- Where content processes and products are varied to meet the needs of each student.
That promote higher level thinking and understanding: seeing connections, interpreting data, and applying learning to new situations.
