Eastern USA Trip Day 8

A special day.  11-11-11 with thirty eight 11 year olds!

Our last full day and we made the most of every minute.  We woke up to cool and windy conditions but thankfully no rain.  By the time we finished our breakfast, the sun was out and we were all thrilled.

We walked through the Boston Common and the Public garden over to Commonwealth Ave., down Newbury and Boylston and over to the Prudential Tower.  Along the way we learned the historical significance of these famous streets and what they are known for today.  I was particularly excited to show the kids the finish line (painted on Boylston Ave.) of the Boston Marathon.  Perhaps one day one of these students might take on that challenge.  Read more...

Eastern USA Trip Day 7

Greetings from Boston!

We had a bit of a different day today.  We travelled from New York to Boston which was a 4 hour bus ride and when we arrived in Boston it was pouring rain!  Our plans changed when the tour guide called us to let us know that there was a student demonstration at Harvard this afternoon and no one was allowed to enter Harvard Yard unless you had a student card.  So instead, we picked up our tour guide at the Boston Common and he took us out to Lexington where we learned all about the conflict between the British and the Colonials.  There was a fantastic media presentation that we watched at the Lexington Visitor Center that made the history very easy to understand.  Read more...

Eastern USA Trip Day 6

Well...we did it....we conquered New York!!

We had an amazing day.  After breakfast we loaded onto the bus and headed north.  During the two and a half hour drive we watched the end of the Forest Gump movie and 3 more episodes of Cheers!  It made the trip fly by and before we knew it we were catching glimpses of the Big Apple!  Read more...

Eastern USA Trip Day 4

Today was a SWEET SWEET Day!

We were up bright and early this morning and on the bus at 7:15 en-route for Hershey, Pennsylvania!  For the two and a half hour bus ride we enjoyed 2 episodes of 'Cheers' and we watched the Addams Family movie.  The kids now know the theme song for Cheers and we are all ready to sing it when we go there for dinner in Boston!  Read more...

Eastern USA Trip Day 3

Stay to the Right was the theme of the day!

Today's adventure started with a trip out to George Washington's home in Mt. Vernon.  Acres and acres of beautiful farm land right on the Potomac River.  It is truly a spectacular place.  We watched an introductory movie about George Washington in the visitor centre and then made our way up to George and Martha Washington's home.  We had a bit of a history lesson from a costumed guide and then went into the 266 yr old home.  It is a spectacular place and very interesting.  Read more...

Eastern USA Trip Day 2

Another incredible day in Washington, D.C. today.  We woke up to clear blue skies after our first night away from home.  We had a hearty breakfast at the hotel (buffet style with pancakes, omelettes, waffles, yoghurt, cereal, juice, milk, fruit), we packed up our day packs and boarded the bus with our tour guide, Tracy!  We had an extensive plan for the day.  I'm not sure how we managed to get it all in, but we were successful and the kids had a wonderful day.   Read more...

Safe Arrival in Washington D.C.

We had an absolutely incredible first day on our trip.  With 38 students and three teachers, we tackled each leg of the trip with enthusiasm and ease.  These well travelled students were the cause of many strangers stopping us in transit and asking what school we were from.  They'd never seen such polite, respectful and kind students.  The flight attendants had a frightened look on their faces when we boarded the plane in Vancouver and by the end of the flight, they were chatting with the students about their trip.  It was great to see.  Read more...
