NEWS: Fair Trade
One of the ongoing fund raisers for Global Outreach is the sale of fair trade beverages and chocolate. For the past two years the students have joined the fund raising program offered through Pistol & Burnes Roastery, a private Vancouver offering fairly traded tea, coffee and chocolate.

A recent article in Resurgence cites organic farming as spreading rapidly with these sustainable practices leading to “substantial increases in production.” Similarly, there is evidence that “fair trade” is now being practiced to some degree in 47 countries. This is particularly the case for coffee where demand for world trade coffee has quadrupled and “has kept an additional $18 million in the hands of producer families.” The author feels there will be no turning back because these operating systems confirm democratic and open development is more responsive and fulfilling to the needs and well being of all. Restoring agriculture to its historical and natural niche, has not only generated harmony in these communities but it also
remains sustainable. (Resurgence, No 243, 2007.)
