CURRICULUM: What's Happening in the Library?

December 5, 2008

Like TwilightThen try these books! You can find them all in Mulgrave School Library!

Brook, Kevin. Road of the Dead. 2007.

When their sister is murdered, Ruben and Cole travel to the village where she was killed to claim her body! There the boys discover brutal and cose-minded villagers determined to cover up the cause of their sister's death.

Colfer, Eoin. The Wish List. 2004.

Meg was killed while committing a crime, so to get to heaven she must first go back to Earth and complete a task. Unfortunately, hell has sent someone back also.

Draper, Sharon. Tears of a Tiger. 1996.

A drunk driving accident causes the death of Robert Washington, captain of the basketball team at predominantly African American Hazelwood High. New articles, dialogues, and other innovative formats show how the student body reacts to the tragedy, and how Andy Jackson, who drove the car, is pulled down by his own feelings of guilt.

Green, John. Looking for Alaska. 2007.

Smart loner Miles, whose hobby is to memorize famous people’s dying words, leaves home for boarding school in search of a “Great Perhaps.” There he meets his first close friends, including enticing but screwed up Alaska Young, and experiences his first great tragedy.

Nix, Garth. Sabriel. 2008.

When the dead cease to stay dead, budding necromancer Sabriel must take the place of her father, a necromancer who has journeyed too far into the land of the dead and becomes trapped.

Shan, Darren. Lord Loss. 2006.

Grubbs Grady thinks he’s a normal middle schooler until he comes home to find his family killed by demons. Suddenly, he’s plunged into a world of werewolves, magic, and horror.

Zevin, Gabrielle. Elsewhere. 2007.

Liz lives Elsewhere, aging backwards and waiting to be reborn. Can she leave her old life behind and embrace the new one?

Zusak, Markus. The Book Thief. 2007.

Death narrates the tale of Liesel and her experiences during World War II.

The Red Cedar Book Program has been officially "launched" in Grades 4, 5 and 6!  Students have the next six months to read and decide which one of the titles on the list they feel is the best Canadian book of the year.

The Red Cedar awards are British Columbia’s annual young reader’s choice book awards. Every year, thousands of children between grades 4 and 6 from across the province are invited to read books from the nominated lists of non-fiction and fiction titles and vote for their favourite.

The purpose of the Red Cedar program is threefold: 1. to enrich and broaden students’ reading experiences, 2. to promote literacy through the reading of quality Canadian literature and 3. to encourage students’ thoughtful evaluation of these reading materials.

In May 2009, our students will vote for their favorites and we will celebrate with a pizza party!

Mulgrave Library
Scholastic Book Fair
officially declared a Grand Success!

It is clear that our students love books!  It is our hope that they will always appreciate books and love to read as it will provide them with a lifetime of pleasure, inspiration, and information all of which will equip them for life!

Thank you very much, students and families, for your enthusiastic support.  Over 200 books were purchased for classrooms by your overwhelmingly generosity. This year volunteers also provided Christmas wrapping by donation and $124.00 was collected for Mulgrave’s Global Outreach program.

A special ’thank you’ to Laura Withers and Catherine Lancaster for their amazing organization and daily running of this year’s Fair and to the fabulous team of parents who worked at the Fair… we couldn’t do it without you!  And, thank you to all our Cliffords and Geronimo Stiltons too for providing us with cheerful good morning greetings and generating a lot of excitement for the Fair.

Mulgrave Library Celebrates Summer Reading at the Annual Ice Cream Party on October 6

Thanks to the help of many volunteers and the organization of Mrs. Brough over 160 Junior School students came together in the library last Monday to celebrate their reading at least 5 books over the summer holiday.  Door prizes of new books were awarded by Ms. Mitchell to 24 lucky participants.

Congratulations to all these young readers!
