Letter from the Head of School
May 9, 2008

Dear Parents,
                                                Quite A Week at Mulgrave!

Sometimes I wonder if anyone really knows what is happening in any given week at Mulgrave.  It seems to me that this past week probably broke all records for participation and achievement. There were so many highlights, it is hard to know where to begin.

1. The 2008 Mulgrave Gala certainly stands out to my mind as being THE highlight in so many ways.  It was beautifully managed, splendidly executed with decorations and opportunities to spend that put Hollywood to shame!  To the many talented and dedicated Volunteers who worked literally for months on our behalf and who were so well lead by Penny Kirkwood and Debra Hann, a "Thousand Thanks" and huge accolades.  Praise must also go to Mark Steffens who did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies and who for sure in his next life will be a Game Show Host!  The evening was great fun, lively, spirited and unquestionably a success.  I have no doubt that when the accounts have been talied, the funds raised will exceed our expectations.  My Special Thanks to you all in the Mulgrave Community for your splendid support and many contributions.

2. The Junior School Show, "Calamity Jane" was another outstanding Mulgrave event this past week.  The Grade 6 students showed their many and varied talents and entertained parents and students alike for three spirited and lively performances.  Indeed they made us all proud of their results and appreciative of the special efforts made by Greg Cusbert and Claude McLean in preparing for this great show.

3. The Fraser Institute report for 2007 on Elementary Schools in the Province showed Mulgrave School, with yet again a perfect score, as the equal top school based of Provincial tests.  Despite our reservations about this kind of ranking of schools, it is important that our standards are recognised and accolades must go out to the Grade 4 and Grade 7 teachers from last year as well of course to our talented and hard working students.

4. Water Polo is not a sport which we often hear about at Mulgrave but this past week saw our own Lauren Bridges from Grade 11 win "Gold" with her team in the Canadian National 18 and under Water Polo Championships, coached by none other than Mr. James Gardner of Mulgrave Junior School fame.  To cap off this success, Mr. Gardner was recognised by his peers as "Coach of the Year" for Water Polo at the national level!

5. The Vancouver Marathon on May 4th also saw some remarkable Mulgrave results. The staff engagement in particular was spectacular:

Mr. Gareth Roland-Jones finished the full marathon in a time of 3:15:18 placing him 15th out of 143 in his age division, Brandon Pao (Grade 11) completed the full marathon in 5:01:14 placing 14 out of 18 in his division, Mr. Michael Moore finished his half marathon in 1:24:37 placing 4th out of 247 in his age division and Ms. Karyn Mitchell finished her half marathon in 1:42:02 to place 12th out of 505 in her age division.

(I feel exhausted just reading these results!)

6.  The Middle School Concert Band were awarded "Gold" this past weekend out of 30 schools participating at the Whistler Band Festival.  In the words of their Director, Sarah Morris,"We have 40 Mulgrave students in this Band and they played the best they have ever played and were very excited after their performance."  Bravo!

7.  The First IB Examinations!  Our Grade 12 students are this week, for the first time at Mulgrave, writing their IB Diploma Examinatons.  This is the culmination of two years of preparation. So, for the next two weeks, they wil be immersed in final exams. We wish them all well and look forward very much to the Convocation for the Class of 2008 on 6th June followed by their Graduation Dinner / Dance the next evening.  By that time, the exams will be a distant memory.

Finally, I would like to report on an outstanding presentation that was made this week to our Middle School students by the Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) introducing our community to the Paralympic Games.  This was an eye-opening experience for everyone present as they learnt about the five Winter Olympic Sports that the Paralympiads compete in with remarkable, skill, detemination and success.  We were indeed fortunate that Mulgrave was chosen for this presenation:  and so the Olympic fever builds!

That was the week, that was!

Sincerely,

Tony Macoun
