THEATRE ARTS

The Mulgrave Senior School Theatre Arts Programme (Grades 10, 11 and 12)

Theatre is a process-oriented program with emphasis on creativity and working collaboratively towards a final group goal. In this regard, students learn the importance of cooperative learning and group dynamics. Along with ensemble work, Theatre Arts helps each student develop stronger interpersonal skills.

MYP Theatre Arts

MYP Art: Theatre Arts 10 is the last year of MYP Arts. Through their experiences in the programme, students will become familiar with a variety of dramatic forms, methods, skills, and theatre history that will prepare them for the IB DP Theatre Arts course. Key highlights include playbuilding for their Global Week evening performance and script work in the last half of the year.

DP Group 6 Arts: Theatre Arts (Grade 11 & 12)

The focus of the Theatre Arts IB Programme is to study the various aspects of theatre, exploring the many schools of thought on acting style and World Theatre, via form and playwright. Students also study all aspects of making and performing theatre, from behind the scenes to being on stage. The course is balanced between research, planning and performing, along with written work. Each student has to create and present a final theatre project.

Music Programme

Instrumental Music

Concert Band and Jazz Band explore and perform music from a variety of genres and cultures throughout the year. Concert band repertoire focuses on literature written specifically for concert band, as well as arrangements of classical, popular and contemporary works, while the jazz band students play swing, Latin, and rock tunes. Students have several opportunities throughout the year to perform in a variety of venues including the school’s own Linda Hamer Theatre, as well as tours to festivals in Whistler, Banff, or beyond. Groups meet twice a week outside of the timetable.

Vocal Music

Concert Choirs are the heart of the choral program at Mulgrave. The Middle School Concert Choir and Senior School Concert Choir sing in a variety of music styles and languages. The choirs can be heard singing at assemblies, concerts, the Kiwanis Choral Music Festival, the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Banff and in the main foyer rehearsing for their next performance. Choir rehearsals occur outside the timetable and during collaborative planning time. Each ensemble meets two times per week.

There are two Vocal Jazz ensembles, which is an opportunity for dedicated choral students to sing a more diverse and challenging repertoire in a small group setting. These ensembles also perform both in and outside of school. All members of Vocal Jazz are required to be members of Concert Choir, as well.

MYP ARTS

The Performing Arts at Mulgrave feature instrumental music, vocal music and theatre.

“The Performing Arts inspire the Mulgrave community to explore humanity, imagination, compassion, integrity and joy while developing personal best through diverse creative experiences.”

Performing Arts is a required course for all Middle School students at Mulgrave. This course exposes students to a variety of performance techniques and encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones. The first term is dedicated to theatre, with each grade building on the skills learned in previous years. Grades 7 students explore mime, while Grade 8 and 9 students explore playbuilding and theatre conventions. The second and third terms feature our Global Arts Perspective unit. Each grade focuses on a different culture and its art practices. The unit includes singing and instrumental music, dance and some theatre. Guest experts are brought in to workshop and perform with the students. The Grade 7 focus is on Africa, Grade 8 on Brazil, and Grade 9 on India. Informal performances occur throughout the year, culminating with our ‘Arts-a-Palooza’ performance held in the spring. The class meets once a week within the timetable.

Mulgrave also offers a variety of Performing Arts LEAP electives, including guitar, Garageband, theatre tech, musical theatre, music combos and string ensemble.
