Creative Arts

The Creative Arts at Mulgrave encompass Film, Design Thinking, and Visual Arts. Creative Arts strives to empower students through their ability to create, experience and explore.

We also encourage service in the arts. We build community by encouraging Upper School students to work with the ELC and Junior School students as they complete art projects and participate in art clubs. Arts students are also active in the community through initiatives such as the Harmony Arts Festival, the Silk Purse Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Students volunteer through the Mulgrave Arts Council, promoting and supporting the arts throughout the school, as well as art room assistants, who maintain the organisation of the art room. Parents have the opportunity to be involved with displaying and documenting artwork, and this has been a wonderful opportunity for those parents who have a special interest in the field to guide and mentor our young students.

FILM PROGRAMME

Mulgrave has a very strong and thriving film department. Students have the opportunity to participate in both film production and film studies where they learn the skills required to create, interpret and critically analyse this powerful communication and entertainment medium. Mulgrave offers film as an elective option in Grade 10 and a core Group 6 course in Grade 11/12. There are also video production and video journalism courses offered in the LEAP program. In addition, Mulgrave initiated and continues to hosts the annual Zoom Film Festival, which is open to all Grade 7-12 students in the province.

MYP ART: FILM 10

Film Studies 10 is an introductory film class intended to introduce students to film and prepare students for the IB Film Diploma Programme. Students will gain experience both in film history and in creating their own films. One of the major goals of the course is to provide the students with a strong understanding of basic film/video composition skills, as well as instil confidence in his/her own ability to create within this technical medium. In addition, this course puts a strong emphasis on life skills & collaboration, providing students with experiences that will go beyond the perimeters of this course, whether or not they decide to continue to pursue film studies in their senior years.

Technical classes are interspersed with the study of films and filmmakers. Students explore a variety of genres and their evolution. They are asked to draw upon their own knowledge, skills, research and experience in their evaluation of films from a variety of eras and cultures.

Students also have an opportunity to use their filmmaking skills in the local community.

Mulgrave has partnered with the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce in an annual project where students are connected with a local business to create a short clip, highlighting some of the amazing people and businesses we have locally.

ZOOM FILM FESTIVAL

ZOOM Film Festival is a 48-hour provincial student film festival.

The Mulgrave ZOOM Film Festival, a competition that involves creating a six-minute film in 48 hours, was initiated by a Mulgrave teacher in the late 1990's. Today, ZOOM is in its 13th year and has one of the highest participation rates of any student film festival in BC. It’s fast become a showcase for the very skills and attributes that Mulgrave believes so strongly in.

ZOOM Fest is open to all students in Grades 7-12. Last year, there were over 400 students involved from schools across the province. It is continuing to grow, due in large part, to the over $80,000 that are awarded as scholarships and bursaries.

The film competition continues to be a highlight for Mulgrave students, and they are often recognized for their efforts at the Awards Night. To learn more about ZOOM and watch award-winning movies from festivals past, visit the ZOOM website at http://www.zoomfest.com.

DESIGN

What is Design?

Design is the ART of PROBLEM SOLVING, plain & simple. Design is what links creativity and innovation. It shapes ideas to become practical and attractive propositions for users or customers. Design may be described as creativity deployed to a specific end. Our motto, “Design with depth,” reminds us that design is not a decorative art, but rather a problem-solving discipline.

Design is a required course for students in Grades 6-9.

In a systematic approach, students conceptualise and evaluate ideas, turning them into tangible inventions, products and solutions. The designer's role is to combine art, science, and technology to create new products or solutions that other people can use. Their evolving role has been facilitated by digital tools that now allow designers to communicate, visualise, analyse and actually produce tangible ideas in a way that would have taken greater manpower in the past.

Product design is sometimes confused with (and certainly overlaps with) industrial design, and has recently become a broad term inclusive of service, software, and physical product design. Industrial design is concerned with bringing artistic form and usability, usually associated with craft design and ergonomics, together to mass-produce goods. Other aspects of product design include engineering design, particularly when matters of functionality or utility (e.g. problem-solving) are at issue.

In Design, students are expected to solve problems through the creation of technological products or solutions. Whether the problems be designing a zero-waste system for the cafeteria or designing a furniture and accessory layout for a local restaurant, students in Design learn to apply the Design Cycle in a creative, analytical and productive manner.

VISUAL ARTS

MYP Art: Visual Arts 7-10

Middle School Visual Arts is a required course each year from Grade 7 to Grade 9. The programme exposes students to a variety of of local and international artists and to work in several mediums, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, photography and digital arts.

Furthermore, students study and complete all the steps in the creative process, taking projects from conception to displaying their final piece. The students are encouraged to find their own creative expression in their works, think critically about the context of their work in the art world and to experiment and take risks to push their work to higher levels. The skills learned can be applied across the curriculum and in the students’ endeavours outside of school. Students also participate in the noon-hour open studio in which they work on both individually-initiated and course projects.

Middle School Visual Art provides the students with a solid framework in the creative process, technical skills and techniques.The students develop knowledge of Art, the language to articulate their understanding and an appreciation of the global and cultural diversity in art. For those aspiring artists who would like to continue onto the Diploma Programme, Middle School Art provides the foundation skills and framework for the students to build on and have success at the higher levels.

DP Group 6 Art: Visual Arts 11&12

The Visual Arts at Mulgrave are vibrant and inspiring. Problem solving, personal expression and increasingly student-driven projects make the course challenging and rewarding.

Students in the Diploma Programme (DP) follow a two-year course that allows them to combine rigorous research exploring the functions of art, along with cultural and historic contexts with technical skills and personal expression. In the second year, students focus on their own independent study, while they are supported in the studio by their teacher, peers and other professionals in the visual arts field.

A unique aspect of the DP course is the degree to which students take responsibility for the direction of their learning through the acquisition of effective working practices. Through developing and maintaining a close relationship between investigation and a purposeful, creative process in studio work, students act as emerging artists and gain the practice for initiating and seeing through their own initiatives.

The Diploma Programme culminates in an art show in early April each year. The students have the opportunity to display the work they have accomplished over their final two years in Visual Arts. The opening to the show is a proud moment for the young artists, their friends, family and the school community.


Why do we offer Design?

At Mulgrave, G6-9 students take a mandatory course in Design.

Design aims to provide the means and the context to help students become skillful problem solvers, who can appreciate the role of technology in everyday life and society and who can respond critically and resourcefully to real-life challenges.

Students will investigate problems and use the Design Cycle as a tool to design, plan, create and evaluate their products/solutions.
