A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM MR. WRAY TO OUR COMMUNITY ABOUT INCLUSIVENESS & DIVERSITY

Image

Earlier this week I lowered our National, Provincial and United Nations flags to half mast to show our respect to the Muslim victims of the shooting in the mosque in Quebec City, who were killed because of their religious affiliation. At Mulgrave, our students and families come from a wide variety of cultures and religious backgrounds, and this includes a sizeable Muslim community. My thoughts are with both our Muslim families and all families as they try to make sense of this tragic event.

At the same time, I put up posters around our school with the following words:

Mulgrave is a proudly diverse and inclusive community.
We welcome students and families from all cultures, religions, nationalities and perspectives.

The objective of these words was to re-emphasise and remind our community of our school's core values at a time when, in various countries around the world, as a result of new approaches to immigration and inclusion, these values seem under attack

MVP SPOTLIGHT - SILVIA HEINRICH

Our community's ties extend beyond a student's time at Mulgrave. Students and families share that Mulgrave feels welcoming whether you are new to the school or alum visiting for their ten-year reunion. In Silvia's case, her daughter Lauren's graduation in 2015 just meant that she wouldn't be seeing her around the halls during her frequent volunteer visits. Silvia, Doug and Lauren came to Mulgrave in 2002 when Lauren

entered Kindergarten, and they were immediately drawn to the personal values being taught and the sense of potential and ambition at the school; "It felt like 'the little engine that could'." Today, thanks in large part to the commitment and dedication of volunteers like Silvia, we are not so little anymore. However, that spirit of hard work, ambition for ourselves and our students, and commitment to giving back is part of our DNA and a shared value among our entire community.  Get to know her here.
