MULGRAVE ACHIEVES CIS ACCREDITATION!

By: Elizabeth Calderon

Last October, as many of you will remember, we hosted a team of accreditation officers from the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation, Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), and the Council of International Schools (CIS).

A few weeks ago, we were informed that we were granted full accreditation of our school by the CIS, and we are now very excited to share selections from the visiting team's report with you.

Mulgrave is the first school in Canada to have earned CIS accreditation. There are just over 450 PK-G12 schools in the world with CIS accreditation. In addition, we are one of 110 schools that have been accredited by the CIS and the IB as a continuum school and today we are one of two in Canada. We are very proud of this distinction, and even more proud of the sheer number of commendations (55!) that we received. The visiting team recognised the work that each of our stakeholders, from our MVP to our Board, have contributed to create the exceptional culture that characterises our school.

ARE YOU A
#MULGREENHERO?

Did you know Mulgrave has started adding high efficiency hand air dryers to bathrooms around school?

These special air dryers cause 70% less carbon emissions in comparison to conventional hand dryers and paper towels.

Industry estimates show that by switching to high efficiency hair dryers the average school (with 30 air dryers) can help save 17 trees a year.  So, be a #MulGreenHero and forgo the paper towel. To learn more about this and other initiatives to help shrink our carbon footprint, click here.

ALUMNI FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: GRANT AYERS

Image

At first glance, you might not guess that Mulgrave's deep roots trail all the way back to a portable in North Vancouver - but for Grant Ayers, one of the school's founding families, these roots are what make Mulgrave the unique, humble, and tight-knit school that it is today.

For such a small school to grow into a world-class school is testament to the endless love, support and generosity from our original families who took a chance on

Mulgrave. Grant had two children graduate from Mulgrave and has been a pillar of support for the school since the early days. (He actually moved the school from that little portable to its new home in West Vancouver!)

Always flying under the radar, Grant has been instrumental in shaping Mulgrave's history. We are very excited to Spotlight this unsung hero, and officially thank him for everything that he has contributed to Mulgrave. Click here to read the full Alumni Spotlight.

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM: 3U EXPLORES ENTHUSIASM

A recent discussion of the PYP attitudes in the 3U classroom sparked the idea for a class tableau. In collaboration with Ms. Bernstein, PYP/MYP Performing Arts Teacher, the class chose 'Enthusiasm'

as the attitude they wanted to further explore and the 'Mannequin Challenge' became the medium for creatively pursuing this exploration. Students brainstormed about how enthusiasm can be expressed inside the classroom and engaged in outlining how they would want to showcase that if they were a 'mannequin'. In the first Inside the Classroom feature of the year, we are sharing the resulting video. Students had so much fun with this lesson that they have challenged another Junior School class to take on another attitude. 5J you have been tagged by 3U! We are keen to share the video that results from the challenge.

SERVICE & LEADERSHIP NEWS

We are very pleased to announce that the highly successful, Senior Service Action Council (SSAC) student-run and overnight educational event, IgNight: Action 4 Esther, is now rescheduled for next weekend Friday, January 27th 4.00pm to Saturday, January 28th at 8.00am. As you may recall, the event was cancelled in December due to a snow day.

Over the past years, student participants and parents alike have praised this 'global education and action' activity as one of the best experiential learning opportunities offered at Mulgrave – student-centred, game-based, action-oriented, engaging, fun and eye-opening.

Passport is our new innovative digital portfolio where students showcase, archive, and reflect on learning inside and outside the classroom. Emails, guides, meetings and grade presentations have shared with students about Passport since September. Students are supported in developing their Passports in Advisory and via guides, presentations and other resources. The Passport embeds expectations of IB CAS within it and replaces the previous eFolio programme. Having set goals and action plans back in October, students are now collecting evidence to post to their Passport that demonstrates learning in their selected areas engagement.

PEOPLE OF MULGRAVE: MEET ETHAN K. & YIN X.

Meet Ethan and Yin, who at their young age (10 and 11 respectively) have composed and recorded their own song, which they released as part of a compilation CD they created prior to the holiday break.

Both G5 musicians took time from their busy extra curricular schedule

to sit down with Mr. Kennedy and discuss their music. Get to know them in this week's People of Mulgrave.
