IB students routinely gain admission to some of the best known universities in the world. Post secondary institutions are drawn to the holistic, integrated approach of the IB, the assessment experiences of the students, and the global outlook of Diploma Programme candidates.
Universities realise that IB students are more "college ready" and are better prepared for competitive success in a global environment. Most of these institutions have established recognition policies for the IB diploma.
In particular, policies and practices in Canadian universities are very supportive in every province. Many use IB scores for admissions decisions as well as for placement and scholarship opportunities. For example:
Simon Fraser University provides a full time Admissions officer to process applications and transcripts from IB students. An offer of acceptance to all programmes (except Business) will be given with 28 points, inclusive of bonus points. Acceptance into the Business programme requires 30 points. Scores of 4 or higher in IB subject will qualify for course credit. Up to 30 credits, an entire academic year, may be obtained. Furthermore, scholarships are automatic with acceptance for scores of 32 - 33 points ($3500) and 34 points and above ($5000).
St Thomas University offers acceptance with a minimum of 24 points, and allows for transfer credits. Scholarships are automatic with acceptance; $2000 is available for students with 24 points.
The University of British Columbia and University of Calgary also actively recruit IB Diploma students. It is strongly advised that students consult the admissions office of any university in which they are particularly interested as recognition policies can change.
